Waldron Wins Singles, Bergesen/Mayer Win Doubles Titles

10/3/04 - The Panther men's tennis team continued to look impressive this fall as they took part in the ITA Regional hosted by M.I.T.
In singles action, junior Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.) was stellar, winning the 64-man bracket. After earning a first-round bye, he won three straight-set victories to advance to the semifinals. After earning a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 win in the semi's, Waldron was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 winner in the championship over the top seeded player in the bracket.
Also turning in solid singles performances were junior Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.), sophomore George Mayer (Merion, Pa.), and first-year player Salih Unsal (Gerrards Crossing, England). Edmunds won three matches before falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinal round. Mayer and Unsal both advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Mayer fell to the top-seeded player 6-2, 6-1, while Unsal was defeated 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Mayer and sophomore Kevin Bergesen (Beverly, Mass.) won five matches en route to the doubles championship by a score of 8-5. After an easy first-round win, the duo survived a 9-8 (3) scare in the second round before winning 8-3 and 8-6 to advance to the semifinals. Scott and junior Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) along with Edmunds/Waldron all advanced to the doubles quarterfinals.
By winning the ITA Regional, Waldron along with Mayer/Bergesen have qualified for the National Small College Men's Tennis Championships on October 14-16.
