Men's Tennis Hosting NCAA Regional - Complete Schedule/Results

The Middlebury men's tennis team will host an NCAA Regional on campus for the sixth consecutive year. The Panthers will host a five-team regional, beginning on Friday, May 4th.

Middlebury enters the weekend with an impressive 18-1 record. The Panthers will be making their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The '04 NCAA Champions have advanced to title match in each of the last two seasons.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Southern Maine has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament with an 5-4 win over Ithaca at Middlebury College. The Huskies (9-2) advance to take on the host school at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in a second round match-up. Ithaca ends its season at 9-13.

S. Maine mounted an impressive comeback as they trailed the match 4-0 before battling back to win the next five contests. Ithaca won three close doubles matches, taking a 3-0 lead early in the match.

The lead grew to 4-0 when Jeff Buffum picked up a quick 6-0, 6-2 win at #6 singles over Ian Carey. Southern Maine would not lose another match on the afternoon, as they captured five of six singles contests.

Chris Chaffee picked up the first win at #4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Danny Wolk. Josh Warren made it a 4-2 match at #2 singles as he was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Taylor Borda. The Huskies came within one as Justin Chaffee was a 6-4, 6-0 victor over Joe Young in the #3 singles slot. Craig Spann defeated Colin Flynn in the #1 singles match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to tie the match at four wins apiece.

The match came down to the #5 singles position, where Derek Stevenson battled back from a 1-6 defeat in the first set to pick up a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Liam Berkowitz to seal the win.

Final Score: Southern Maine defeats Ithaca, 5-4.

Middlebury had little trouble with Southern Maine as they captured all three doubles matches before holding convincing leads in singles play. The Panthers won the first set of all six singles matches, losing just two games. Andrew Thompson was the first player to earn a victory for Middlebury, defeating Derek Stevenson 6-0, 6-0 in the #5 singles slot. Filip Marinkovic sealed the win as he won his #6 singles match over Ian Carey with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sets.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Amherst advanced to the regional final of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament with an 5-4 win over M.I.T. at Middlebury College. The Jeffs will take on NESCAC foe Middlebury at noon on Sunday in the regional final.

The doubles matches were tight, with Amherst coming away with three hard-fought victories for a 3-0 advantage. Jeffrey Wan gave the Jeffs a 4-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 singles over Peden Nichols. Daniel Kim sealed the win as he defeated Said Francis 6-4, 6-0 in the #6 slot to clinch the 5-0 win. Though close, he Jeffs had also won the first set of the remaining four singles matches.

Final Score: Amherst defeats M.I.T., 5-0.

Third Round Summary

The Middlebury men's tennis team will make its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals after defeating Amherst 5-2 in an NCAA Regional Final on campus. The Panthers will take part in the championship week from May 15-20 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Louis, in an event hosted by Washington University.

Middlebury led 1-0 in double play as Kevin Bergesen/Andrew Thomson were 8-2 winners over Geoff Schwartz/Jeffrey Wan of Amherst. The Jeffs tied the match as Zach Lernaer and Tal Avarhami defeated Alex Scott and George Mayer by a score of 8-5. Middlebury took a 2-1 lead into singles play as Filip Marinkovic/Conrad Olson defeated Karti Subramanian/Michael Mintz, 8-4.

The Panthers extended their lead as Marinkovic cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Daniel Kim in the #6 singles slot. Jeffrey Wan brought the Jeffs back as he defeated Kevin Bergesen 6-2, 6-1 in the #4 slot to make it a 3-2 contest.

That would be Amherst's only win in singles play as Thomson and Mayer wrapped up their matches to clinch the 5-2 victory. Thomson defeated Subramanian 6-2, 6-2 at #5, while Mayer was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Schwartz at #3.

Final Score: Middlebury defeats Amherst, 5-2.
