Schwarz Named ITA Regional Coach Of The Year

Middlebury College men's tennis coach Dave Schwarz has been named the ITA Men's Tennis Northeast Coach of the Year. Schwartz currently has his team making its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and seventh straight trip to the quarterfinal round. Middlebury has also won five NESCAC Championships, including a 5-3 victory over Amherst on May 3rd.

Schwarz is in his ninth year as head coach of the men's tennis program at Middlebury. In his previous eight seasons, Schwarz led the Panthers to national prominence with an impressive 130-32 record. He has led the team to four consecutive NESCAC titles ('04-'07) as well as six straight trips to the NCAA final four. The '04 squad captured the school's first NCAA Tennis Championship, while the '06 and '07 squads set school records with 22 wins.

Following the team's national crown in '04, Schwarz was named the ITA Division III National Coach of the Year. He is also a three-time selection ('02, '04, '07) as the NESCAC Coach of the Year.

Schwarz came to Middlebury from Cornell, where he was the assistant men's tennis coach and Director of the Reis Tennis Center on campus. Following his final season at Cornell, Schwarz was named the Division I Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's tennis programs at Cornell for two seasons.

Schwarz is a 1989 graduate of Cornell, where he played four years of varsity tennis. He received his master's degree from Cortland State in 1995 and then worked as an assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Ithaca College from 1996-1997.

He has continued to be an active player, earning singles and doubles championship honors in Tompkins County, New York on five different occasions. He was also named the Southern Tier Player of the Year in 1999. A USTA member, Schwarz has been the victor of several men's open tournaments throughout New York and Vermont.
