Men's Tennis Edges Amherst

The top-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team improved to 15-2, 7-0 in NESCAC play with a hard-fought 5-4 win over fifth-ranked Amherst (22-8, 7-1) at home. In doubles play, Middlebury took a 2-1 lead over Amherst by winning the first and third matches by 8-5 and 8-4 scores, while the Jeffs edged out a win at number two. Mark Kahan and Moritz Koenig fought off the doubles sweep from Middlebury by winning 7-1 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 victory at number two doubles.

In singles action, the two top teams in the region split the six matches, allowing the Panthers to hold on for the narrow victory, 5-4. Eliot Jia made it a 3-1 match with a 6-0, 6-3 win at #5, before Austin Chafetz topped Andrew Peters 6-2, 6-1 at #1 to cut the lead to 3-2. The Jeffs knotted the match when Sean Doerfler earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alec Parower at #6, before the Panthers regained the lead on a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at #3 by Andrew Thomson over Moritz Koenig.

Amherst tied the match once more when Wes Waterman earned a 7-5, 6-4 win over Peter Odell in the fourth slot, leaving the match at 4-4 with the #2 singles match in progress. In the final match of the day, Andrew Lee came up big for the Panthers, earning a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory to secure the victory.
