Barr Takes Over Men's Tennis Program

September 1, 2010

Rob Barr has been named the interim head coach of men's tennis at Middlebury College. Last year's assistant coach takes over for Dave Schwarz, who departed for Brown University to take over as the head coach.

"I'm extremely excited to take over the reins of the Middlebury program," said Barr. " I hope to continue the success Dave Schwarz built here over the past 10 years."

Barr was an integral part of the men's NCAA championship team at Middlebury in 2010. He coached several All-Americans, including the ITA Championship doubles duo of Andrew Thomson and Andrew Lee.

Barr has extensive collegiate coaching experience at the Division I level, coaching at four different institutions before joining Middlebury.  Barr served as the men's assistant at Rice University and the University of New Orleans and served as the head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University and the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Barr has also coached a number of professional tennis players, including Thailand's Davis Cup members Danai Udomchoke, Sonchat and Sonchai Ratiwatana. He has coached players at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Australian Open as well as tour events around the world.

Since 2004, Barr has served as the Director of Tennis at The Essex Resort and Spa, consistently voted one of the top rated tennis camps in the country.

He is an '89 graduate of Southern Arkansas University, where he played three years of tennis, leading the team to a top 10 national ranking in 1984. Today, he continues to play competitively at the sectional and national level.
