Men's Tennis To Defend NCAA Title

May 20, 2011

The Middlebury College men’s tennis team is making its 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and ninth straight trip to the quarterfinal round. The Panthers will meet Emory in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, May 24th. Matches are taking place at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center and Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont, California. Claremont and Pomona-Pitzer will serve as the host schools.

The Middlebury men have won 10 of 12 matches entering the championship week, boasting an impressive 18-3 record. The Panthers have won 17 or more matches for eight straight seasons, advancing to the final four in seven of those eight seasons. Middlebury boasts a 29-9 record in NCAA Tournament play since ’02, winning national titles in ’04 and ’10. The Panthers advanced to the national championship match in ’05 and ’06. Middlebury has also won six NESCAC Championships and are ranked 10th in the latest ITA poll.

Last weekend, the Panthers hosted and won an NCAA Regional for the 10th straight season. Middlebury topped Stevens Institute 5-1, before defeating NESCAC foe Bowdoin 5-2 in the regional final.

The Panthers are led by senior Andrew Peters (Baltimore, Md.), the NESCAC Player of the Year. Junior Derrick Angle (Troy, N.Y.), sophomores Alec Parower (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Spencer Lunghino (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and rookies Zach Bruchmiller (San Antonio, Texas) and Brantner Jones (Winnetka, Ill.) round out the top six. Senior Mike Malhame (Douglaston, N.Y.) and junior David Farah (Flint, Mich.) are doubles specialists who are expected to play at the NCAA’s as well.

Interim Head Coach Rob Barr took over the program in September and has continued the winning tradition by leading the team to nationals once again. He served as an assistant coach for last year’s NCAA Championship team, before taking over the reigns this fall.

Following the team championships, Peters will compete in the NCAA singles championship, while Peters/Jones will battle in doubles play.

Middlebury’s probable line-up: Singles: 1. Peters, 2. Bruchmiller, 3. Parower, 4. Angle, 5. Lunghino, 6. Jones. Doubles: 1. Peters/Jones, 2. Malhame/Angle, 3. Lunghino Farah.
