Men's Tennis Boasts Impressive Results At Bates

The Middlebury men's tennis team  took part in the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates. Senior Alex Johnston (Leeds, England) took home the “A” singles bracket, earning four straight-set victories. He defeated senior teammate Teddy Fitzgibbons (Mission Hills, Kan.) in the finals by a score of 6-1, 6-4, while junior Courtney Mountifield (Bedford, N.H.) also advanced to the semifinal round before falling to Fitzgibbons, 6-4, 6-4.

Sophomores Jackson Frons (Encino, Calif.) and Ari Smolyar (Short Hills, N.J.) both advanced to the semifinal round of the “B” singles bracket. In “C” singles, sophomore Allen Jackson (Charlotte, D.C.) took home the title with four straight-set victories. Senior teammate Andrew Lebovitz (Weston, Mass.) advanced to the semifinals of the bracket, while senior James Burke (Summit, N.J.) won twice, taking part in the “D” singles flight.

In doubles play, Johnston/Lebovitz advanced to the finals of the “A” bracket, before falling 9-8 (4). The “B” flight saw Jackson/Fitzgibbons take home the title with an 8-5 victory. The duo of Burke and sophomore Jack Welch (Winchester, Mass.) advanced to the semifinals in the “B” flight.
