#8 Men’s Tennis Races Past #26 Skidmore

In a match featuring two nationally-ranked opponents, #8 Middlebury picked up its eighth-straight win with an 8-1 victory over #26 Skidmore (9-7) Tuesday evening in men’s tennis action. The Panthers will have a few days off from competition before hosting #3 Amherst on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Middlebury (15-2) concludes the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. match Sunday at #28 Tufts.

Moved indoors to the Nelson Recreational Center due to weather, Middlebury got off to a great start winning all three doubles points. At #1, the 24th-ranked duo of Alex Johnston and Andrew Lebovitz eased to an 8-3 win over the nation’s sixth-ranked tandem of Skidmore’s Danny Knight and Oliver Loutsenko. At #2, the nation’s top-ranked duo of Brantner Jones and Palmer Campbell  along with the #3 team of Peter Heidrich and Ari Smolyar were victorious by identical 8-4 scores over their respective opponents.

During singles action, Loutsenko, the nation’s third-ranked player, grabbed the Thoroughbreds’ lone point of the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Johnston. The hosts picked up the other five points in straight sets. Jones won at #2 over Jimmy Sherpa (6-3, 6-3), Campbell was victorious at #3 over Knight (6-4, 6-4) and Smolyar posted a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at #4 over Miles Ransom. In the final two flights, Courtney Mountifield posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Alec Hoblitzell, while Jackson Frons cruised at #6 against Gabe Steerman (6-0, 6-1).
