Ski Teams Lead After Day One

2/27/04 - The Middlebury College ski teams are in first place after day one of the Middlebury Carnival at the Rikert Ski Touring Center and the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. Action continues tomorrow with nordic races at 10:00 and 11:15, and continuous alpine action from 9:30 until approximately 3:00 p.m.

The nordic teams had impressive finishes in each of their respective races. The men placed skiers in 2nd, 5th and 6th in the 10K freestyle race, while the women had impressive 2nd, 4th and 6th place finishes in the 5K freestyle race.

 

Leading the Middlebury men was Garrott Kuzzy, who placed second with a time of 23:30, seven seconds off the winning pace. Coming in fifth was Beau Baldock in 24:23, followed by Colin Rodgers in sixth (24:33).

 

On the women's side, Kate Newick came in second with a time of 13:33, six seconds off the winning time. Placing fourth was Kate Whitcomb with a time of 13:44, followed by Claire Anderson in sixth (13:55).

 

The men's alpine team from Middlebury had a solid showing, placing racers in 5th, 6th and 11th in the slalom race. Fred Emich led the pack with a time of 1:21.53, 1.6 seconds off the winning time. In sixth was David Coriell (1:21.61), followed by Eric Rygg in 11th (1:23.34).

 

The women's alpine squad saw Jessica Smith lead the pack in fifth place with a time of 1:35.57, two seconds off the winning time. Placing ninth was Brie Pike-Sprenger (1:36.69), while Lindsay Brush came in 12th (1:37.12).
