Panther Skiers Third At Williams

2/19/05 - The Panthers made it five third place finishes in five carnivals as they placed third at the Williams Carnival. Middlebury will host the Eastern Championships this weekend at the <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Rikert Ski Touring Center and the Snow Bowl.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Junior Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) paced the men's nordic team with a fourth place finish (26:58) in the 10K freestyle race. Placing eighth was sophomore Beau Baldock (Jackson, Wyo.) in 27:47, followed by junior Jake Whitcomb (Worthington, Mass.) in 20th (29:24). In the classic sprint relay, the team of Kuzzy, Baldock and first-year racer Matt Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) finished fourth overall with a time of 29:03.

Sophomore Evelyn Dong (Wayland, Mass.) led the Middlebury women with a sixth place finish (16:35) in the 5K freestyle race. Junior Jenny Jorvig (Minnetonka, Minn.) was next for the Panthers in 11th place (17:00), followed by junior Claire Anderson (Whitefish, Mont.) in 14th (17:05). In the relay, the team of senior Tyne Pike-Sprenger (W. Dover, Vt.), junior Taylor Leach (Old Forge, N.Y.) and sophomore Erin Pittenger (McCall, Idaho) finished fifth with a time of 36:29.

On the slopes, the men's GS squad was solid, winning the event with racers in third, seventh and eighth places. Junior David Coriell (Killington, Vt.) led the pack in third with a time of 1:55.73. Placing seventh was senior John Rusten (Federal Way, Wash.) in 1:56.64, followed by first-year racer Joseph Swensson (Niantic, Conn.) in eighth (1:56.81). The Panthers didn't fare as well in the slalom, with the exception of a third place finish by Rusten (1:47.07). Placing 15th was senior Derek Shields (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with a time of 1:51.15, followed by first-year racer Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) in 19th place (1:54.24).

First-year racer Megan Hughes (Killington, Vt.) led the women's team in the GS, finishing four with a time of 1:59.75. Placing 11th in the race was first-year racer Krissy Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) in 2:02.29, followed by sophomore Lindsay Brush (Charlotte, Vt.) in 13th (2:02.78). In the slalom, Hughes finished fifth in 1:36.13, followed by Brush in seventh with a time of 1:37.47. Finishing 14th in the race was Poehling, coming in with a time of 1:40.09.
