Ski Teams Race At UVM

2/5/05 - The <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Middlebury College alpine and nordic ski teams finished third for the third straight week as they raced at the University of Vermont carnival. Dartmouth won the event, followed by Vermont.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The women's alpine turned in some impressive performances over the weekend as they won the slalom and placed second in the GS. First-year racer Krissy Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) led the team in the GS, placing second overall with a time of 2:05.90. Finishing seventh in the race was sophomore Lindsay Brush (Charlotte, Vt.) in 2:07.23, followed by sophomore Tara Martin (Lyndonville, Vt.) with a time of 2:08.46, good for eighth place. First-year racer Megan Hughes (Killington, Vt.) turned it up the next day in the slalom as she won the event with a time of 1:33.94. Just behind her was Martin in 1:34.52, followed by Brush in fifth place (1:37.02).

Senior John Rusten (Federal Way, Wash.) paced the men's team in the GS, finishing ninth with a time of 2:01.45. Coming in 10th in the race was senior Peter Phillips (New York, N.Y.) in 2:01.99, followed by sophomore Andrew Everett (Andover, Mass.) in 13th place with a time of 2:02.96. Everett came back strong the next day as he led the team with a fifth place (1:37.39) finish in the slalom. Just behind him was junior David Coriell (Killington, Vt.) in sixth place (1:38.04), followed by Phillips in 11th (1:38.73).

Junior Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the men's nordic team in the 10K classic as he placed fourth with a time of 34:35. Coming in 11th in the race was sophomore Beau Baldock (Jackson, Wyo.) with a time of 35:23, followed by sophomore Dan Skold (Worthington, Mass.) in 18th place (36:15). Kuzzy moved up a spot in the 20K freestyle race, placing third with a time of 56:13. Baldock again placed 11th (57:19), while first-year racer Jimmy Ades (Shelburne, Vt.) was Middlebury's other scorer in 13th place (57:44).

The women's nordic team struggled a bit over the weekend, placing fifth in both the 5 and 15K races. Pacing the team in the 5K classical was junior Jenny Jorvig (Minnetonka, Minn.), who placed 12th with a time of 19:59. Coming in 20th in the race was sophomore Evelyn Dong (Wayland, Mass.) with a time of 20:16, followed by junior Taylor Leach (Old Forge, N.Y.) in 21st place (20:18). Dong paced the team in the 15K race, finishing eighth with a time of 46:27. One place behind her was Jorvig in 46:40, followed by junior Claire Anderson (Whitefish, Mont.) in 18th place with a time of 47:53.
