Athletes Volunteer At Beeman

November 8, 2006

Members of the Middlebury College men's lacrosse and alpine ski teams recently returned from a long rainy day of volunteering at the Beeman Elementary School in New Haven, Vermont. The Panthers joined over 100 volunteers who were on hand to help construct a long-awaited playground.

Thirty members of the men's lacrosse team arrived at Beeman at 8:00 a.m. on October 28th. Holes were already dug in the ground, awaiting a mixture of concrete and steel as the equipment was erected. Team members split into groups and began to assemble the various parts of the playground. Several athletes were hauling wood chips that covered the playground surface as the assembly was going on.

At 1:00 p.m., the alpine ski team arrived to continue with the project. Assembly was finished up as the wood chips covered the ground in the play area.

"It was fantasic. Even with the driving rain and the wind, we got it up," said Beeman Principal Carol Barnes. "We have been so lucky and this community has been amazing."
