Ski Teams Place Second At Opening Carnival

The Middlebury College nordic and alpine ski teams opened up the '08 carnival circuit at the Bates Carnival in Maine. The Panthers finished second only to Dartmouth, followed by Vermont, New Hampshire and Bates.

The alpine teams both placed third in the GS, while capturing the slalom events. Senior Alec Tarberry (N. Conway, N.H.) finished second in the slalom with a time 1:32.55, while capturing the GS title with a time of 1:59.83. Junior Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) was the school's top finisher in the slalom, placing third with a time of 1:32.50, while senior Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) finished eighth (1:32.92). Senior Joseph Swensson (Niantic, Conn.) finished 11th in the GS (2:02.38), while first-year racer Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) placed 18th (2:03.38).

On the women's side, junior Tucker Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) finished second in the slalom with a time of 1:37.02. Placing fifth was senior Krissie Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) in 1:39.44, followed by senior Megan Hughes (Killington, Vt.) in seventh (1:40.45). Hughes paced the team in the GS, finishing sixth with a time of 2:06.79. Burton placed 10th (2:07.73), followed by rookie Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) in 11th (2:08.28).

First-year racer Alexa Turzian (Hailey Idaho) was impressive on the nordic side, capturing the 10K classical in 31:50, while placing second in the 5K free in 13:04. Junior Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) finished 11th in the 5K (13:43), while finishing eighth in the 10K (33:39). Rookie Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) was Middlebury's other scorer in the 5K, placing 12th with a time of 13:45. Junior Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) did the same in the 10K, finishing 11th in 33:53.

The men's nordic squad was led by junior Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.), who finished second in the 10K free (23:04) and fourth in the 10K classical (26:30). First-year racer Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) placed second in the classical (26:21) and 10th in the freestyle (23:42). Sophomore Mike Mommsen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) was Middlebury's third scorer, finishing 30th in the freestyle (24:18) and 17th (27:22) in the classical race.
