Panthers Place Third At Own Carnival

The 86th Middlebury College winter carnival is complete, with the Panthers earning a third place finish with 834 points. Dartmouth won the carnival with 881.5 points, followed by UVM (866), Middlebury and UNH (697.5).
The Middlebury women captured the giant slalom, with three racers in the top five. Junior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) had her best performance of the season, coming from fourth after the first run to capture the event with a combined time of 2:06.98. Placing third was senior Mattie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) in 2:08.04, followed by sophomore Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) in fifth (2:08.09). Ford and sophomore Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) led the squad in the slalom, finishing in a sixth place tie with a time of 1:39.21. Dvorak rounded out the scorers with a 13th place finish in 1:39.94.
Sophomore Bobby Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) led the men in the GS, placing fifth overall with a time of 2:02.77. Senior Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) earned an eighth place finish (2:03.49), followed by junior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) in 13th (2:04.19). Wagner earned a solid third place finish (1:32.83) in the slalom, followed by sophomore Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) in 10th (1:34.69) and junior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) in 18th (1:35.59).
Leading the nordic men on the weekend were senior Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.), sophomore Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) and senior Simeon Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.), who won the men's 3x5K free relay event on Saturday, finishing with a time of 41:22. Johnson led the group in the 10K classic, placing ninth in 27:14, followed by Hamilton in 10th (27:26). First-year racer Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) was Middlebury's third finisher, placing 14th with a time of 28:00.
Seniors Kate Barton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) and Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) comprised the women's 3x5K relay team that finished fourth overall in 51:23. Anderson paced the team in the 10K classic, earning a seventh place finish with a time of 32:25. Junior Lauren Fritz (Chugiak, Alaska) placed 17th (33:26) in the race for the Panthers, followed by Edwards in 19th (33:28).
