Ski Teams With Second Place Finish At Dartmouth

February 14, 2009

The Middlebury College ski team turned in its best performance of the year as the Panthers placed second overall at the Dartmouth Carnival. The host school won the events with 921 points, followed by Middlebury (842), UVM (779) and UNH (713.5).

A key to the success at Dartmouth was a healthy and complete nordic men's team for the first time this season. On day one, senior Simeon Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) won the men's 10K classical race with a time of 26:19, 14 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. The race is the first of the season for Hamilton, who joined the team after competing at the recent U23 World Championships. Hamilton followed that up with a win in the men's 15K free on Saturday, capturing the event with a time of 28:06.

Sophomore Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) turned in a pair of great performances as well, coming in fifth (27:22) in the 10K and sixth (38:20) in the 15K. Senior Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.) continued his impressive outcomes, finishing 10th in the 10K (27:37) and third (38:14) in the 15K event.

Middlebury had several other top performers, with five racers in the top 10 in the 10K race on Friday. First-year racer Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) placed sixth (27:28), followed by junior Mike Mommsen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) in seventh place (27:33).

First-year racer Elise Moody-Roberts (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) turned in a pair of top five performances to pace the women. The rookie finished the 5K classical in third place (15:27), while earning a fourth place (30:24) finish in the 10K freestyle. Senior Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) earned an eighth place (15:59) finish in the 5K, followed by senior Kate Barton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 11th (16:16) and sophomore Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in 14th (16:23). Barton moved up to sixth place (31:01) in the 10K race, while McClelland rounded out the scorers in 17th (32:04).

Sophomore Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) led the alpine women on both days, placing eighth (1:53.71) in the GS and fifth (1:40.03) in the slalom event on Saturday. Sophomore Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) earned a 12th place finish (1:54.16) in the GS, followed by junior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) in 21st (1:55.62). Senior Mattie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) was Middlebury's second finisher in the slalom, placing 10th overall in 1:40.99. Senior Tucker Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) rounded out the scorers in 12th place (1:41.96), with a solid finish from sophomore Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) in 16th (1:43.10).

Senior Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) led the alpine men, placing fourth (1:48.76) in both the GS and the slalom (1:34.49). Sophomore Bobby Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) placed 13th (1:50.50) in the GS, followed by junior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) in 16th (1:50.74) and junior Brian Swartz (Mendon, Vt.) in 18th (1:50.83).
