Ski Teams Place Fourth At St. Michael's

The Middlebury College ski teams were in action on week two of the carnival circuit, competing at the St. Michael's Carnival. The Panthers earned a fourth place finish with 742 points, as Dartmouth (855) won the event, followed by Vermont (784) and UNH (754).
Middlebury received some great results in the nordic relay events on Saturday, after a solid day of racing on Friday. Junior Graham Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) led the team in the 15K freestyle race, placing fifth overall with a time of 42:45. Three spots behind in eight place (43:14) was rookie Dylan Grald (Randolph Center, Vt.), followed by sophomore Noah Brautigam (Richmond, Vt.) in 14th place (44:18). The following day, Egan and sophomores Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) and Douglas Debold (Wayzata, Minn.) won the 3x3 spring relay with a combined time of 30:51.
The women's team saw rookie Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) place 22nd overall (33:12) in the 10K freestyle race. Two seconds behind was senior Lauren Fritz (Chugiak, Alaska) in 23rd, followed by first-year racer Keely Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 26th place (33:19). In the sprint relay race, Fritz, Prevot and Levins finished second overall with a time of 37:51.
The men's alpine team continued to impress, placing second in the GS and third in the slalom. In Friday's GS race, rookie Brian Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) had another solid race, placing third overall with a time of 1:39.32. Finishing the race in eight place (1:40.61) was junior Bobby Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.), while rookie Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) finished 13th overall (1:40.98). Poehling stepped it up a notch the following day, placing second in the slalom race in 1:34. Senior Brian Swartz (Mendon, Vt.) came in 14th in the race (1:38.91), followed by senior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) in 23rd (1:42.58).
Junior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) was the top women's racer on the weekend, placing eighth in the GS (1:44.61) and seventh in the slalom (1:46.78). Junior Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) was 15th in the GS (1:45.70) and 23rd in the slalom (1:52.00), while senior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) was Middlebury's third scorer in the GS, finishing in 19th place (1:46.13). Earning points for the Panthers in the slalom race was junior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.), finishing with a time of 1:50.55, good for 15th place.
