Ski Team Ends Carnival Season

The Middlebury ski team ended the carnival season with a fourth place finish at the Bates Carnival (EISA Champ./NCAA Regional). Vermont won the event (1,017), followed by Dartmouth (874), UNH (709) and Middlebury (684). The Panther men's GS team was tops on the weekend, finishing second overall. Middlebury returns to action from March 10-13th at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) continued to lead the alpine women, finishing third in the slalom (1:40.39) and 10th in the GS event (2:34.97). Sophomore Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) was next in both races, earning a 15th place (1:43.36) finish in the slalom, while coming in 19th place (2:35.98) in the GS. Senior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) rounded out the scorers in the GS in 21st (2:36.45), while sophomore Bronwyn Oatley (Thornhill, Ont.) did the same with a 20th place finish (1:44.91)in the slalom.
Rookie Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) had another big weekend on the men’s side, placing second in the GS (2:26.80) while earning a top 10 finish in ninth in the slalom (1:35.61). First-year racer Robert Cone (Killington, Vt.) missed the carnival due to an injury, with sophomore Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) scoring in both races, including 10th in the GS (2:28.99) and 19th in the slalom (1:36.65). First-year racer Nick Bailey (Boise, Idaho) took Cone’s spot, earning a seventh place finish (2:28.49) in the GS race. Senior Bobby Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) was the team’s other scorer in the slalom, finishing 19th with a time of 1:36.65.
Sophomore Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) and senior Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) scored in both races to lead the nordic women. Prevot came in 10th (16:11) in the 5K free and 17th (55:19) in the 15K classic, while McClelland was 24th (16:46) in the 5K and 22nd (56:18) in the 15K. Sophomore Hilary Rich (Andover, Mass.) was Middlebury’s third racer in the 5K, finishing 32nd in 16:58, while first-year racer Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came in 23rd (56:21) in the 15K event.
Junior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) led the men’s team in the 10K free race, placing 12th overall in 30:04. One second behind in 13th was first-year racer Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.), followed by senior Jimmy Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 22nd (30:23). Lustgarten paced the team in the 20K classic, placing fifth overall with a time of 1:02.47. Levins came in 14th (1:04.34) in the race, followed by senior Graham Egan (Stuart, Fla.) in 22nd (1:05.33).
