Five Softball Players Honored

5/7/04 - Five members of the Middlebury College softball team were named to the All-NESCAC team today. Seniors Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) and Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) were named to the first-team, along with junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.). Earning second-team honors were junior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) and sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.). The five helped lead the Panthers to a school-record 24 wins this season, along with a trip to the NESCAC Championship game.

Freyer earns first-team honors for the second straight year after being named to the second team during her sophomore season. She hit .363 this season, while leading the team with 23 runs scored. The senior centerfielder also drove in 19 runs and hit a pair of homers to go along with her six doubles.

McCarthy earns first-team honors as being named to the second-team a year ago. The senior was Middlebury's top pitcher this season with a 7-4 record and a 0.84 ERA with 64 strikeouts. She also had a great season at the plate, hitting .359, with 23 hits on the season.

Also earning first-team honors was George, the Panther's catcher. She led the team in hitting this season and ranked fifth in the league with a .372 average. She also paced the team in doubles with seven and RBI with 25.

Earning second-team honors at first base was Guza. The junior hit .333 this season, while leading Middlebury with 114 at-bats, 17 more than anyone on the squad. She hit six doubles on the season, while scoring 20 runs.

Hurd earned the same honor as the team's shortstop. She hit an impressive .340 this season, with five doubles and 17 RBI. She also scored 22 runs, while going 7-7 in stolen bases.
