Softball Drops First Game At NESCAC Tourney
May 6, 2005
5/6/05 - Junior Julia Brenta (San Anselmo, CA) pitched a two-hit shutout and senior SS Courtney Bongiolatti (Locust, NJ) had two hits that led to both runs as the Tufts Softball team won the first game of the NESCAC Softball Tournament, 2-0, against Middlebury College on Friday afternoon.
Tufts (26-6) advances to play Williams College in the winner's bracket on Saturday at 10 am. This is a change to the original schedule due to rain in the forecast for Saturday. Williams (22-12) defeated Trinity College, 7-1, in the second game of the NESCAC Tournament on Friday. Middlebury (20-9) will play Trinity (15-14) in an elimination game on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
In the Tufts-Middlebury tilt, only one Middlebury runner reached second base against Brenta, who improved to 7-0 overall. She twice walked Panther runners to lead off the second and third innings, but Middlebury could not make anything out of it.
Panther pitcher Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, FL) was also effective, but Bongiolatti came through twice. She led off the fourth by popping a triple down the right field line and scored when DH Erica Bailey (Scottsdale, AZ) hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the sixth, Tufts 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) led off with her second single of the game. After she was sacrificed to second, Lopez scored on a double by Bongiolatti. Lopez and Bongiolatti both went 2 for 3 for the Jumbos.
Christine Grimaldi (Westport, CT) and Katie Hurd (Fairfield, CT) had the Middlebury hits. McCarthy, who dropped to 7-3, allowed six hits and struck out four in six innings.
