Pitching Helps Softball Win Two Against Lyndon State

5/4/05 - Leading 2-1, Middlebury broke open the scoring against Lyndon State with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and raced away with a 12-1 five-inning victory in game one. Game two saw the Panthers pull away from the Hornets in the later innings and win in six innings, 9-1. Middlebury will be in NESCAC double-elimination tournament play later this week at Tufts. The Panthers will be playing the host school this Friday at 2:30 p.m. The game can be heard on the internet at www.jumbocast.com.

In the first game, the Panthers batted around and scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Katelyn Cannella had three RBI and Lauren Battaglia chipped in two RBI while each went 3-for-3 to lead Middlebury's attack. Lyndon's Jennifer Kirchoff had the only hit, a triple, and scored the only run for the Hornets in the second inning. Brittany Burke earned her sixth win allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out six in five innings of work.

Game two saw a strong pitching performance by Middlebury's Megan McCarthy. The senior pitched five of the six innings striking out 10 and allowing just one hit on the day for her seventh win on the season. The Panthers built an eight run advantage by the sixth inning and were sparked by Battaglia's 3-4 and three RBI performance. Six other Panthers had hits including Ellen Sargent and Susan Miranowski who had two hits apiece. Kirchoff again scored the lone run and had the only hit, a double, for the Hornets.
