Softball Splits With Castleton

4/15/05 - The Middlebury College softball team split a pair of games down route 30 as they took on Castleton State. The Panthers won game one 10-1, in a five-inning shortened game. The second game went nine innings, with Middlebury coming up on the short end of a 9-8 contest.
In game one, Middlebury struck for two runs in the second and four in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Colleen Sullivan had a double in the second inning and a two-run double in the third to spark the offense. Middlebury sealed the game in the fifth inning with four more runs, including a two-run double by Maura Casey.
Jennifer Williams earned the win, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out five over five innings of work. Lauren Battaglia had two hits in the game, while Sullivan went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Casey ended the game 3-3 with five RBI.
In game two, the Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead with a pair of unearned runs. Castleton tied the game with three solo runs before Middlebury struck for four runs in the top of the eighth inning. An RBI double by Christine Grimaldi, an RBI single from Battaglia, and a two-run homer from Sullivan accounted for the four runs. The Spartans came right back in the bottom of the inning with four of their own to force a ninth inning. The teams exchanged runs in the ninth before Castleton won the game on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 10th.
Lauren Guza went 4-5 in the game with a pair of runs scored, while Battaglia had two hits.
