Softball Players Earn NESCAC Honors

Three members of the Middlebury College softball team earned All-NESCAC honors when the league announced its post-season team. Junior Geena Constantin (Pelham, N.H.) earned a spot on the first-team, while junior Megan Margel (Ridgewood, N.J.) and first-year player Jessa Hoffman (Golden Colo.) earned a spot on the second-team. The three helped lead the team to an impressive 18-12 record in '09.

Constantin capped an impressive season for the Panthers with a spot on the first-team. At 7-5 inside the circle over 15 appearances, Constantin was third among NESCAC hurlers with a 1.76 ERA and 84 strikeouts over 87.2 innings, holding opposing batters to a league-low .199 average. Constantin recorded a perfect game in the first outing of a doubleheader sweep of Hamilton on April 10, as she struck out four of the 21 batters she faced in the 6-0 victory. At the plate, she was second on the team with a .425 average, owning three doubles, three triples and 15 RBI. She had three or more hits in a game four times this season, including a 3-4 effort with three runs scored and two RBI vs. Morrisville.

Margel earns a spot on the second-team for the third straight season. The junior first baseman led the team with a .437 average on the season, third in the NESCAC. She led the team in at-bats (103), hits (45) and RBI (19), while hitting four doubles and a pair of triples. Margel had 17 multiple-hit games, going 6-9 in her final two games of the season.

Hoffman had a sparkling season at shortstop, finishing third on the team with a .376 batting average. She scored a team-high 25 runs in '10, pacing the squad with six doubles and six triples (2nd in NESCAC). Hoffman also drove in 15 runs and stole five bases. The rookie also had a big game vs. Morrisville, going 5-5 with a double, triple, and four RBI.
