Softball Takes Two From Castleton

Middlebury swept two games versus Castleton 7-2 and 13-3, with the latter ending in five innings. On the day the Panthers pounded out 22 hits, including 10 for extra-bases. The pair of wins pushes Middlebury’s record to 10-7, winning five of six on their home stand with a three-game series against Hamilton to open NESCAC West action beginning on Friday.
Leading 1-0 after two innings in game one, the Panthers scored three in the third. Jessa Hoffman’s team-leading fifth triple plated a pair of runs. Jessica Poracky knocked Hoffman home with a crisp single to center for a 4-0 lead.
Trailing 5-0, Castleton (6-12) scratched a run across in the sixth when Stephanie Sylvester laced a two-out RBI triple to right center. Middlebury answered with two in the bottom of the frame for a 7-1 lead after six innings. A two-out, RBI double from the Spartans’ Tori Fearon capped the scoring in the top of the seventh.
Poracky and designated player Emily Kraytenberg each had two hits in the opener along with an RBI, while Hoffman also had a pair of hits and three RBI to pace the Panthers. Elizabeth Morris pitched the first three innings allowing one hit and recording five strikeouts. Morris yielded to Marcela Olvera in the fourth as Olvera (1-0) earned the win, pitching four innings, allowing one earned run.
Five Spartans had solo hits in game one, as Fearon and Sylvester each had extra-base hits and one RBI. Taylor Lively (3-8) went six innings, allowing five earned runs in defeat.
In game two, Middlebury used two huge innings to blow the game wide open. In a scoreless second inning, Middlebury scored eight runs on five hits with three Spartan errors. Leading 2-0, Hoffman hit a bases-loaded double down the left field line scoring two more runs highlighting the rally.
Trailing 8-0 in the top of the third, Castleton answered with three runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Shannon Jipner cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center. With the Panther lead cut to 8-3, Middlebury answered in the bottom of the frame with five more runs. With runners on second and third with one out, Hoffman doubled to the base of the centerfield wall scoring two more runs. Poracky followed with a two-run homer to deep left center for a 12-3 lead. After Kraytenberg doubled to left center, Sarah Boylan smacked an RBI triple to cap the scoring.
Five Panthers collected two hits in game two, including Kimber Sable and Kraytenberg who each had a single and a double. Hoffman went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI, while Boylan hit a pair of triples on a 2-2 game with two runs and one RBI, and Poracky added an RBI SAC fly to her two-run homer. Kelsey Martel (3-3) got the win, pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs.
Kristy Pinkham went 2-2 for Castleton, as Jipner had the big three RBI triple for the Spartans. Emily Sweeney (3-4) took the loss, with eight of the 13 runs earned.
