Softball Wins At Wesleyan - Clinches Tourney Bid
April 26, 2013
Middlebury took game one of a three game NESCAC West series at Wesleyan, clinching a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. The Panthers let a 4-0 lead get away in the fifth but rallied to retake the lead with a three-run homer by Kimber Sable in the sixth for the 8-7 win. The teams will conclude their series with a double-header Saturday in Middletown.
Middlebury now has an 8-2 conference record while Wesleyan fell to 7-3. Wesleyan can clinch a spot with a victory on Saturday and will be the top seed with a sweep. Middlebury can lock up the first seed in the West with a split.
Middlebury broke a scoreless tie in the fourth and got its first hit of the game off Wesleyan’s Su Pardo when Sable got the first of her three hits in the contest with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessa Hoffman. The Panthers tacked on three more in the fifth to up its lead to 4-0. Sable started the rally with an RBI single, Jackie Stern added an RBI with a ground ball and Hoffman finished off the inning with an RBI single.
Wesleyan got seven runs back in the bottom of the fifth, combining four hits with three Panthers errors to score five of the runs unearned off Elizabeth Morris. Both starting pitchers allowed only two earned runs in the game.
But the three-run lead didn't make it past the next Middlebury at-bat as a fielding error by Wesleyan with one out in the sixth opened the door. After the second out was recorded, Middlebury made it 7-5 on Alex Scibetta's run-scoring single before Sable unloaded a liner over the centerfield fence to put Middlebury back in the lead, 8-7. Morris then retired the next six Cardinals she faced to up her record to 11-1 on the season. Pardo suffered her first loss against 12 wins this year.
Sable finished the game 3-4 with a triple, homer, three runs scored and four RBI. Stern went 2-4, while Scibetta was 2-3 with two runs scored.
