Softball Advances In NESCAC Tourney
May 3, 2013
Elizabeth Morris fired a three-hit shutout and Jessica Poracky drove home all three runs as Middlebury won 3-0 over Bowdoin in game two of the NESCAC Softball Championship at Tufts University's Spicer Field on Friday. The Panthers (26-9) advance in the winner's bracket and will play host Tufts in game four of the tournament on Saturday at 12:30 pm. The Jumbos defeated Wesleyan, 3-1, in Friday's first game.
Though both pitchers allowed hits in each of the first two innings, Morris and Bowdoin’s Melissa Della Torrre were in a 0-0 tie heading to the third. Morris retired the side in the top of the inning, but Middlebury scored twice after two were out against Della Torre. Jackie Stern had an infield single, while Jessa Hoffman followed with a single to center. Poracky scored both with a double over the right fielder's head.
Morris got into a groove in the middle innings. She retired 14 in a row from the second through sixth innings, including six straight by strikeout at one point.
In the fifth, Middlebury added an insurance run after Stern led off with a bunt single. She came all the way around to score when Poracky knocked another ball over the outfield's head in center for her second double. Della Torre struck out the next two batters to strand Poracky at second.
The Polar Bears would not threaten to score against Morris. She finished with 13 strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings while improving to 12-1. Poracky was 2-3 with three RBI, Stern was 2-3 with two runs, and Hoffman also had two hits as Middlebury finished with nine.
Bowdoin's Della Torre dropped to 13-7 with the loss, allowing all nine Middlebury hits and three runs with six strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
