Swim Teams Open Season At Conn. College & Springfield

The Middlebury College swimming and diving teams opened up their seasons with a busy weekend on the road. The Panthers took on Tufts and Connecticut College on Saturday, before visiting Springfield on Sunday. The men's team lost to Conn. 141-120, fell to Tufts 211-81, while dropping a 156-139 contest with Springfield. The women's squad defeated Conn. 168-127, fell 175-123 to Tufts, before dropping a 159-135 match with Springfield.
In the dual match on Saturday, sophomore Alyssa Ha (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) picked up a win and two second place finishes. Ha won the 400 IM in 4:46.74, while placing second in both the 200 free (1:58.71) and the 100 fly (1:01.31). Senior Catherine Suppan (Burlington, Vt.) won the 100 back in 1:01.74, while placing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.46). Earning a first place finish in the 100 free (54.83) was sophomore Emily McDonald (Glenwood Springs, Colo.), while placing second in the 50 free (25.30). Sophomore Annie Friedlander (Deephaven, Minn.) was a victor in the 200 back (2:17.24), senior Cornelieke Lammers (Hingham, Mass.) finished second in the 200 back (2:17.85), while rookie diver Meagan Collins (Darien, Conn.) was second in the 3M competition with 133.5 points.
Senior Kevin O'Rourke (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led the men with a pair of wins in the 200 free (1:46.81) and the 500 free (4:55.18). The men's 200 free relay team comprised of O'Rourke, junior Schuyler Beeman (Guildford, Conn.), sophomore Jay Li (Las Flores, Calif.) and first-year racer Adam Schaffer (Orinda, Calif.) placed second in 1:29.04.
At Springfield, McDonald was a winner in the 50 free (25.33) and the 100 free (54.94). Also earning wins were Suppan in the 50 back (28.52), Collins in 3M diving (242.84) and Ha in the 200 IM (2:15.09).
Winning for the men at Springfield were O'Rourke in the 1000 free (10:05.34), Beeman in the 50 free (22.62) and rookie Kazu Asaga (Chappaqua, N.Y.) in the 100 back (56.22). Two men's relays teams also earned victories, the 400 medley (3:42.98) and the 400 free (3:16.08). Asaga, senior Peter Swanson (Honolulu, Hawaii), sophomore Kevin Glatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) and rookie Nick Daly (Cape Elizabeth Maine) were on the medley squad, while Beeman, O'Rourke, Li and Daly comprised the 400 free team.
