Volleyball Opens 2-2 At Endicott Tourney

The Middlebury College women's volleyball team opened its season with a 2-2 mark at the Endicott Invitational Tournament. The Panthers lost to St. Mary’s on Friday 3-2 (14-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 12-15) before bouncing back with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) victory over the host school. On Saturday, Middlebury fell to UMass.-Boston 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-10) before closing out the weekend with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 25-19) win over Salve Regina.
In the opener, sophomore Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) earned 14 kills and 19 digs to go along with 2.5 blocks to lead the team. Juniors Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) and Sarah Studwell (Pittsford, N.Y.) each added eight kills in the match, while classmate Madeline Firestone (Solvang, Calif.) had three blocks. Junior Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) had a team-high 20 digs in the match, while sophomore Courtney Shepard (Centennial, Colo.) dished out 31 assists.
Gibbs earned 17 kills and 15 digs in the team’s first win of the season against Endicott. Jarchow added 15 kills and 19 digs in the win, while Studwell earned 11 kills. Barrett and sophomore Meg Anderson (Berlin, Mass.) each had a team-high 21 digs, while Shepard earned 56 assists.
Middlebury opened play on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to a tough UMB team. Jarchow had seven kills and 10 digs in the contest.
The Panthers ended the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Salve Regina. Jarchow led a balanced attack with nine kills and 16 digs, while senior Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) had eight kills. Barrett led the team with 20 digs, while Gibbs, who was named to the all-tournament team, earned 60 assists.
