Volleyball Sweeps Colby

Middlebury earned a 3-0 (17, 22, 18) win over Colby (4-6, 1-1) in its NESCAC and home-opener in Pepin Gym. The Panthers move to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in the league and have not dropped a set all season. Middlebury returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Colby-Sawyer.

With the first set tied at 13-13, Middlebury scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-15 lead and eventually win the set. The Panthers led 11-9 in the second set before the Mules made a nice run to take a 16-13 advantage. Middlebury chipped away and trailed 21-20 before taking the set, 25-22. Colby looked like they would force a fourth set as they held an early 10-5 lead in the third set. Megan Jarchow began to serve for the Panthers, as they rattled off four straight to make it a 10-9 match. Colby later led 17-16 before Middlebury scored nine of the final 10 points to take the third set.

Amy Hart led the team with 17 kills, eight of them in the third set, to go along with a .485 hitting percentage. Olivia Kolodka had nine kills in the match, while Kathryn Haderlein earned 30 assists. Defensively, Lauren Alper (14), Hart (13) and Hannah Blackburn (11) paced the team in digs. Melanie English earned three block assists in the victory.

Sarah Arvidson led Colby with eight kills, while Ellie Linden and Kate Pleasants each had 11 assists. Anna Clifford (13), Natalie Roy (11) and Arvidson (11) were the team’s digs leaders.
