Brakeley Wins National Scholarship

6/4/04 - Rebecca Brakeley of Middlebury College, the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 NCAA Women’s Division III Lacrosse Championship Game, was named the winner of CSTV: College Sports Television’s inaugural $5,000 Diane Geppi-Aikens Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded by CSTV (www.collegesports.com), the first 24-hour college sports network, to the senior women’s college lacrosse player who has displayed the same extraordinary leadership, character and perseverance as exhibited by Geppi-Aikens, the Hall of Fame coach women’s lacrosse team who passed away last summer from brain cancer just weeks after leading Loyola (Md.) to the NCAA Final Four.

Five Women's Lacrosse Players Named All-American, Six All-N.E.

6/2/04 - Five members of the Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team were named to the IWLCA/U.S. Lacrosse All-American teams. Seniors Nuala O’Donohoe (Needham, Mass), Becca Brakeley (Middlebury, Vt.) and Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) were all named to the first-team, while junior Caitlin McCormick (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.) were given second-team honors. All five helped lead Middlebury to a perfect 19-0 season with the team’s fourth NCAA Championship.

Brakeley Is A Finalist For National Scholarship

5/20/04 - Rebecca Brakeley (Middlebury, Vt.) of Middlebury College, Gail Decker of James Madison University and Theresa Sherry of Princeton University have been named finalists for the inaugural Diane Geppi-Aikens Scholarship awarded by CSTV: College Sports Television to the senior women’s college lacrosse player who has excelled on and off the field.  The winner will be announced at the Tewaaraton Trophy Awards Dinner Thursday, June 3 at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. College Sports TV will televise the ceremony Thursday, July 1, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Women's Lacrosse Wins Fifth NCAA Championship

5/16/04 - The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team won its fifth (’97, ’99, ’01, ’02) NCAA Championship with a 13-11 overtime victory over the College of New Jersey at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The Panthers end the season at 19-0, a school-record for wins along with a fourth perfect season. Middlebury is now 70-1 over the past four seasons and 131-7 over the past eight. The national title is the 22nd for Middlebury College since ’95 and the fifth this school year.

Women's Lacrosse Headed To NCAA Championship Game

5/15/04 - Middlebury (18-0) will make its seventh trip to the NCAA Championship game after a 13-9 win over Amherst in the NCAA semifinals at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The Panthers will take on The College of New Jersey (18-0), a 14-9 winner over Salisbury, in the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. This will be the seventh meeting between Middlebury and TCNJ, with the Lions holding a 4-2 advantage. The teams have not met since a 12-6 Middlebury win in the ’02 title game.

Women's Lacrosse Headed To Final Four

5/10/04 - The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team will make its 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA semifinals this weekend. The Panthers will meet NESCAC foe Amherst in the semifinals on May 15th at 2:30 on the campus of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The winner will meet The College of N.J./Salisbury winner (11:30 a.m.) on Sunday at 1:00 for the NCAA title. The championship game will be televised live on CSTV (College Sports Television, 611 on DirectTV, also available on some local cable systems).

Women's Lacrosse Headed To Regional Final

5/8/04 - Middlebury took an 8-3 halftime lead and never looked back as they picked up a 10-5 win over Cortland State in an NCAA Regional on Kohn Field. The Panthers will take on Wheaton, a 14-13 winner over William Smith, in the NCAA Regional final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Four Panthers Earn All-NESCAC Honors

5/7/04 - Four members of the Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team were named to the All-NESCAC team. Seniors Nuala O’Donohoe (Needham, Mass) and Becca Brakeley (Middlebury, Vt.) were named to the first-team along with sophomore Elizabeth Renehan (St. Davids, Pa.). Earning second-team honors was sophomore Alison Perencevich (Concord, N.H.), while head coach Missy Foote was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. The five will lead the Panthers this weekend as they host an NCAA Regional on Kohn Field.

Women's Lacrosse To Host NCAA Regional

5/3/04 - Middlebury will make its 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance when they host one of four, four-team Regionals this weekend on Kohn Field. The Panthers will meet the winner of the Cortland/N.E.C. game (played on Wednesday) at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. William Smith meets Wheaton in the other contest at 2:30 p.m. The winners meet at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday in the NCAA Regional Final. The winner advances to the NCAA semifinals/championship next weekend at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. Middlebury will be looking to make its 11th straight appearance in the NCAA semifinals.

Grenert Earns Player Of The Week Honors

5/3/04 - Middlebury College women’s lacrosse goalkeeper Sarah Grenert (Sewickley, Pa.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week.

Grenert anchored the Middlebury defense this weekend as they won their fourth consecutive NESCAC Championship. She allowed 6.5 goals/game and made 18 saves as Middlebury picked up wins over Bowdoin and Amherst to win the title. Grenert now leads the NESCAC with a 5.33 GAA and a .650 save percentage.

Women's Lax Wins NESCAC Title

5/2/04 - Middlebury won its fourth consecutive NESCAC Championship over Amherst, this time by a final score of 13-6 on Kohn Field. The Panthers receive an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, while Amherst is expected to receive an at-large bid. Selections will be announced on Sunday night, with the NCAA Regionals beginning next weekend. Middlebury will enter the tournament with a perfect 15-0 record, while Amherst sports a 14-2 mark, with both losses coming to Middlebury.

Women's Lacrosse Headed To NESCAC Final

5/1/04 - For the fourth consecutive year, Middlebury will meet Amherst in the championship game of the NESCAC women’s lacrosse tournament. The Panthers earned the right with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Bowdoin in the semifinals on Kohn Field. Amherst advanced with a 19-10 win over Williams.

Women's Lacrosse Set To Host NESCAC Championship

4/27/04 - For the fourth consecutive year, Middlebury College will be the host school for the NESCAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Top-ranked Middlebury (13-0) will take on #16 Bowdoin (11-6) at noon Saturday on Kohn Field, while #9 Williams (10-4) will take on #3 Amherst (13-1) in the other match-up at 2:30. The winners will meet for the NESCAC Championships and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at noon.

Women's Lax Ends Perfect Regular Season

4/24/04 - Middlebury finished its perfect regular season (12-0) with an 18-4 win at Bates. The Panthers draw a bye for Sunday's first-round NESCAC Tournament games and will host the semifinals and championship next Saturday and Sunday on Kohn Field.

Schuyler Winstead scored four goals, while Nuala O'Donohoe added three goals and three assists as Middlebury coasted to a win at Bates. The Panthers led 13-2 at the half and never looked back. Johanna Rosenfield made seven saves in goal for the win.

Women's Lacrosse Clinches NESCAC Regular Season Title

4/21/04 - With a 21-7 win over Williams, Middlebury clinched the NESCAC regular season title and the right to host the semifinals and championship on May 1st and 2nd on Kohn Field. First-round games will take place this Sunday, with Middlebury drawing a bye.

Women's Lax Improves To 11-0

4/17/04 - Middlebury improved to 11-0 and won its fourth game of the year by a score of 14-5, as they topped Bowdoin on Kohn Field. The Panthers held the Polar Bears to just one first half goal on their way to the win.

Women's Lacrosse Defeats Skidmore

4/15/04 - Middlebury scored four goals in the game’s first 7:22 on its way to a 15-6 win over Skidmore on Kohn Field. This marks the final non-league game of the season for Middlebury as they return to conference play when they host Bowdoin on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

O'Donohoe Named Player Of The Week, Again

4/12/04 - For the second consecutive week, Middlebury College women’s lacrosse player Nuala O’Donohoe (Needham, Mass.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. She shares this honor this week with Cornwall, Vermont native Allison Aldrich of Amherst.

4/10/04 - Nuala O'Donohoe scored four goals and and assisted on two others as Middlebury improved to 9-0 with a 13-7 road win at Trinity.

4/3/04 - Nuala O'Donohoe scored seven goals to lead #1 Middlebury to a 17-10 win over #2 Amherst. The Panthers improve to 7-0 overall with the win.

3/30/04 - Top-ranked Middlebury closed the game on a 5-0 run as they pulled away for a 14-5 win over Union on Kohn Field.

Women's Lacrosse Tops Wesleyan

3/27/04 - Top-ranked Middlebury scored six unanswered goals in the second half on its way to an 11-5 win over Wesleyan in NESCAC action on Kohn Field. The Panthers hand Wesleyan its first loss of they season, while they improve to 5-0 overall.

3/23/04 - Nuala O'Donohoe and Claire Edelen scored two goals apiece to lead Middlebury to a 7-5 win over Salisbury in a game played at the University of Maryland. Kim Walker, Alison Perencevich and Elizabeth Renehan each tallied solo goals in the win. Sarah Grenert made 14 saves in goal. (box)

3/20/04 - Middlebury scored 13 unanswered goals in the first half on its way to a 17-0 win over Connecticut College in a game played at Trinity. Nuala O'Donohoe scored four goals, while Elizabeth Renehan added three in the win. (box)

Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With A Win

3/13/04 - Middlebury opened its season with an 8-3 win over Colby in a game played on the turf at Bates. Nuala O'Donohoe scored three goals and assisted one another, while Michele Bergofsky and Alison Perencevich added two goals and one assist apiece. Sarah Grenert and Johanna Rosenfield combined to make 10 saves in goal. (box)

Foote Inducted Into N.E. Lax Hall of Fame

The New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame recently announced its 2003 Class of Inductees and honored those individuals at a ceremony at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, MA on January 24th, 2004.  The nine person class included Middlebury's women's lacrosse coach Missy Foote.
