Five Softball Players Honored

5/7/04 - Five members of the Middlebury College softball team were named to the All-NESCAC team today. Seniors Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) and Michaela George (Ross, Calif.) were named to the first-team, along with junior Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.). Earning second-team honors were junior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) and sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.). The five helped lead the Panthers to a school-record 24 wins this season, along with a trip to the NESCAC Championship game.

Softball Team Falls In NESCAC Title Game

5/1/04 - The amazing season for the women’s softball team came to an end on Saturday as they fell 2-0 to Williams in the NESCAC Championship game. The team broke several records this year, including most wins in a season with 24. The seniors have come a long way after struggling though a 4-17 mark during their rookie season.

Panther Softball Squad Sweeps Norwich

4/24/04 - Middlebury swept two from Norwich in its final regular season games of '04. The Panthers took game one 8-5 before winning the second game 4-3 in eight innings. Michaela George, Lauren Battaglia and Colleen Sullivan each had two hits apiece to lead the Panthers in the first game. Christine Freyer drove in a pair, while Kathryn Hurd scored three runs. Lauren Bowe earned the win, allowing three earned runs. (box)

Softball Team Prepares For NESCAC Tourney

4/27/04 - For the second consecutive year, the Middlebury College softball team will take part in the NESCAC Tournament. The Panthers will take on Bowdoin at Williams on Friday, in a three-day double-elimination tournament.

Softball Team Headed To NESCAC Tournament

4/24/04 - With a two-game sweep of Hamilton, the Panther softball team has advanced to the NESCAC Tournament. They finished the regular season with a 7-1 NESCAC West record, leaving them in a first place tie with Williams. Unfortunately for Middlebury, the Ephs win the tie-breaker and will host the tournament next weekend. The Panthers will take on Bowdoin next Friday at 5:00 p.m., while Williams meets Tufts in the early game at 2:00 p.m.

Middlebury Takes Two At Skidmore, Sets School Record For Wins

4/22/04 - Middlebury set a school record for wins and improved to 18-6 on the season as they took a pair on the road at Skidmore. In game one, the Panthers broke open a 1-0 game with seven runs in the seventh inning to earn an 8-0 win. Jennifer Williams threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits. Megan McCarthy struck out the side in the seventh. Ellen Sargent was 1-3 in the game with a two-run double, while Christina Freyer and Victoria Glowacky also had doubles. (box)

Softball Team Sweeps Lyndon State

4/20/04 - The Panther softball team improved to 16-6 on the season as they took two from Lyndon State on the road. An RBI single by Jennifer Williams in the seventh inning of game one gave Middlebury the 1-0 win. Williams also earned the win as the team's pitcher, tossing the two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

Softball Team Sweeps Bates

4/18/04 - Middlebury swept two from Bates on Sunday, in a pair games against a NESCAC East opponent. In game one at Bates, the Panthers came from a 3-0 deficit to pick up an 11-3 win. Middlebury exploded for four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth on its way to the victory. Senior Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Lauren Battaglia (Framingham, Mass.) each had three hits in the game, with Freyer driving in two runs. Sophomore Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) went 2-3 with two runs and three RBI, while First-year pitcher Jennifer Williams (Scarborough, Maine) earned the win in the five-inning shortened game.

Softball Team Splits With Castleton

4/15/04 - Middlebury picked up an 8-6 win in game one before Castleton battled back to earn a split with a 5-4 win in the second game. The Panthers banged out a dozen in hits in game one as Lily Hamburger went 1-3 with a two-run double, while Michaela George was 2-4 with and RBI single and double. Jennifer Williams earned the win, while Lauren Bowe picked up the save.

Softball Team To Run Clinic

4/13/04 - The Middlebury College softball team will be running a youth clinic for kids ages 10-16. The clinic will take place on Sunday, April 25th from 2-4:00 p.m. at the Orwell Field on Route 22A at the Orwell four corners. Hitting, pitching, fielding and base running will be covered by members of the Middlebury coaching staff as well as team members. There is no charge for the clinic and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Softball Team Sweeps Wesleyan, Lead The NESCAC

4/10/04 - Middlebury swept a pair from Wesleyan in its home openers today by scores of 3-0 and 4-2. The Panthers are now alone in the first place in the NESCAC West standings with a 5-2 record, and an 11-5 mark overall.

Softball Team Sweeps Green Mountain

4/6/04 - The Middlebury softball team swept a pair of games at Green Mountain by scores of 7-0 and 7-2. In game one, Lauren Bowe earned the four-hit shutout, while Kathryn Hurd drove in three runs. Lauren Guza and Lily Hamburger each had a pair of hits in the win. Jennifer Williams was the winner in game two, allowing one earned run over seven innings. Michaela George was 2-3 with four RBI in the contest, while Lauren Guza also had a pair of hits. (box1) (box2)

McCarthy Named NESCAC Player Of The Week

4/5/04 - Middlebury College softball player Megan McCarthy (Winter Springs, Fla.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week.

 

McCarthy was stellar in a 1-0, 11-inning win in game one of a twin-bill at Williams last weekend. The junior pitcher threw all 11 innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five batters for the complete game win. She improves to 5-2 overall on the season with a mere 0.88 earned run average.

4/3/04 - The Middlebury College softball team earned a solid weekend split on the road as they defeated Williams 1-0 in 11 innings, before dropping game two, 4-1.

Softball Team Goes 4-4 In Florida, Sweeps Amherst

3/27/04 - The Middlebury College softball team went 4-4 in Fort Myers, Florida before sweeping a pair of NESCAC games from Amherst on their return trip north.
