Margel Earns All-NESCAC Honors

Middlebury College softball player Megan Margel (Ridgewood, N.J.) has earned second-team All-NESCAC honors in her first season with the Panthers. The rookie had an impressive season at Middlebury, leading the team with a .361 average, starting all 34 games in ’08. Margel also led the team in hits (32), doubles (4), triples (3) and RBI (35). Her 35 runs batted in led the NESCAC heading into this week’s play. The lefty had some notable games this spring, including a 4-5, 5 RBI performance in a win at Skidmore and another four-hit game at Amherst.

Softball Ends Season With Home Split With Hamilton

The Middlebury and Hamilton softball teams ended their seasons today as they each picked up a win in a doubleheader. The Panthers earned a come-from-behind 4-3 win in game one, while the Continentals came back with an 8-1 win in the second contest. Middlebury ends its season at 14-20, while Hamilton finishes with a 12-15 record.

Softball Drops Game One To Hamilton

Middlebury’s two out, three run rally in the bottom of the seventh wasn’t enough to catch visiting Hamilton as the Continentals held on to win 9-8 on Friday evening. With the win, Hamilton improves to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in NESCAC West play, while the Panthers drop to 2-8 in conference action and 13-19 on the season. The three game series continues on Saturday with the first pitch slated for noon.

Softball Drops Two At Plymouth

Middlebury saw Plymouth State come from behind to capture both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the twinbill, 7-4 and 5-2, at D&M Park. PSU has won five of its last six games to improve to 22-12 overall, while Middlebury drops to 13-18.

Softball Overpowers Green Mountain In Doubleheader Sweep

Middlebury won both games against visiting Green Mountain by scores of 8-0 and 14-1, both contests were shortened to five innings due to score differential. The fourth inning was key for the Panthers in each game, scoring all eight runs in game one and 11 runs in game two. Middlebury improved their record to 13-16 with the twin-bill victories, while the Eagles fall to 10-18 on the season. Both teams return to doubleheader action on Wednesday as the Panthers travel to Plymouth State and Green Mountain heads to Johnson State.

Softball Drops Tight One At Amherst

Amherst scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Middlebury. Middlebury played a textbook first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead, with the Panthers’ rookie class providing all of the offense. Emily Burbridge led off with a single through the left side before Carlie Crawford and Megan Margel executed a sacrifice bunt and singled to right field, respectively.

Softball Splits A Pair With Williams

Trailing 2-0 in game one, Middlebury got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single to center by Brittany burke, scoring Carlie Crawford. The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning, taking a 3-2 lead on a SAC fly by Megan Margel.

Softball Drops Game One At Williams

Morgan Simpson fired a complete-game five-hitter and Becky Sansone smacked a two-run home run Friday as Williams picked up a 4-1 win over Middlebury. The two teams play again Saturday in a twinbill beginning at noon in Williamstown.

Union Sweeps Softball

Union improved to 16-3 on the season as they took a pair of road games at Middlebury by scores of 5-2 and 12-0 in five innings. The Panthers return to action with a NESCAC West series at Williams on Friday and Saturday, before visiting Amherst on Sunday.

Softball Earns Split At Amherst

Middlebury split a pair of NESCAC West league games at Amherst on Sunday afternoon. The Jeffs picked up a 9-0 win in a five-inning first game, while the Panthers came back to win a 6-5 12-inning contest in the second game of the day.

Softball Drops Three To Wesleyan

Wesleyan moved to 8-1 in NESCAC West league play as they took three games from Middlebury on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 0-3 in league play and will return to action on Sunday with a pair of games at Amherst. Middlebury struggled in the field, committing 13 errors in the three games, allowing 13 unearned runs.

Softball Sweeps Castleton In Home-Opener

Middlebury shut down in-state foe Castleton 7-0 and 6-0, in sweeping the double-header. The Panthers allowed only five hits in the two shutout wins. The Panthers improve to 9-7 overall and hold a 12-2 all-time lead in the series against the Spartans. Middlebury returns to NESCAC West action on Friday and Saturday, hosting a three-game series against Wesleyan and travel to Amherst  for a rescheduled double-header on Sunday.

Softball Is Swept At Rensselaer

Middlebury dropped a pair of tightly-contested games as the Panthers fell 5-3 and 2-1 at Rensselaer. The Panthers will play their home-openers on Wednesday when they host Castleton in a pair of games beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Softball Sweeps Skidmore

The Middlebury College softball team pounded out 25 hits on the way to a 5-3, 11-3 sweep of Skidmore, Wednesday at Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-13, while the Panthers improve to 7-5.

Softball Team Opens Season with 10 Games In Florida

The Panther softball team opened up its season in Florida with 10 games over the spring break. In the season-opener against Rivier, Middlebury’s opponent scored six runs in the last two innings to break-up a scoreless tie, on its way to a 6-0 win. Senior Katelyn Cannella (Pleasantville, N.Y.) had a single, while senior Brittany Burke (Medfield, Mass.) doubled for the Panthers.
