Roche Nominated For National Award

Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), a 2007 graduate of Middlebury College and a former member of the Panthers’ women’s tennis team, has been nominated for the 2007 NCAA Sportsmanship Award by the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

Roche & Smyser Named All-Americans

Senior Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and junior Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) both earned All-American honors from the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association). Roche and Smyser were All-Americans in doubles play, after advancing to the NCAA Championship match. Roche also earned the honor in singles play after another impressive season.

Amy Roche and Claire Smyser took part in the NCAA individual championships from May 18-20th at Mary Washington University in Virginia. Roche competed in singles action, while the duo played together in the doubles bracket.

The Middlebury women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-3 loss to Washington & Lee in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The match was played at Mary Washington University in Virginia. The Panthers end their season with a 13-5 record and a pair of NCAA Tournament wins.

For the second time in three years, the Middlebury College women’s tennis team has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers earned the right with a 5-0 win at Bowdoin in an NCAA regional final contest. Middlebury will take on Washington & Lee on Tuesday, May 15th at 2:00 p.m. at the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Maryland.

The Middlebury women's tennis team swept Vassar 5-0 in second-round NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament play on Saturday at Bowdoin College. With the victory, the Panthers (12-4) advance to play in the regional final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against host Bowdoin College.

Middlebury College women’s tennis player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) has been named the 2007 NESCAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, as decided by the conference coaches. Roche helped her squad secure the top seed in the NESCAC Women’s Tennis Championship this year and a 10-4 overall record on the season heading into this weekend’s NCAA Tournament.

Women's Tennis Wins Four Of Five

The Panther women’s tennis team won four of five matches they played over spring break, including a 9-0 win at Hamilton on Sunday. Middlebury opened the break with a 6-3 win over S.E. Missouri State in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Panthers defeated Whitworth 9-0 the next day, before falling 6-3 to Depauw. Middlebury handed Missouri-St. Louis a 9-0 loss before returning north to defeat Hamilton.

Middlebury dropped its first head-to-head match of the fall as they fell to Amherst, 6-3. The Panthers trailed early, dropping all three doubles matches in hard-fought battles. Three Middlebury players earned wins in singles play as Claire Smyser, Elizabeth Stone and Clare Burke were each winners on the day.

Middlebury Competes At ITA's, Roche Wins Singles Title

Senior Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) captured the ITA singles championship this weekend at M.I.T. for the second consecutive season. The 64-person bracket featured the top-ranked players in New England, Roche going 6-0 en route to the tournament singles title. In the title match, Roche came away with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over her opponent from Williams. With the win, Roche earned herself an automatic bid to the 2006 ITA National Small College Championships in Florida later this month.

Morgan Named Women's Tennis And Squash Coach

Mike Morgan has been named the new head coach of the women’s tennis and squash programs at Middlebury College. He succeeds Nate Simms, who took over the men’s tennis program at Skidmore, and David Saward, who will take on administrative duties beginning this fall in addition to his role as the men’s soccer coach. Morgan comes to Middlebury from NESCAC member Colby, where he has served as the men’s and women’s head tennis coach since 2003-2004 as well as the assistant coach for men’s and women’s squash.
