The Middlebury women’s basketball team opened up its season with a 66-61 overtime loss to the host school at the UMass.-Boston Tip-Off Classic. The Panthers return to action on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the consolation game with the tournament taking place at Simmons College.
Trailing 16-9, Middlebury went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 on a three from Nora Kelly at the 8:56 mark of the first half. The run extended to 12-1 when a hoop from Katie Ritter gave the Panthers a 21-17 lead at the 7:17 mark. The Beacons later closed the first half on an 8-3 run to take a 30-25 lead into the intermission.
Middlebury trailed by nine in the second half before a three from Laura Lowry ended a 9-2 run to tie the game at 36-36 at the 14:16 mark. UMB increased its lead to 10 midway through the period before the Panthers chipped away, knotting the game at 52-52 on a jumper from Ritter with 1:35 left to play. UMB took the lead with 45 seconds on the clock before a bucket from Rachel Crews five seconds later sent the game into overtime.
Trailing by one in the extra sessions, the Beacons went on an 8-0 run with Middlebury missing a pair of shots and turning the ball over twice. A three from Crews brought Middlebury within four with 23 seconds remaining, but that’s as close as they’d get.
