Women's Hoops Tops Colby-Sawyer

The Middlebury women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season, topping Colby-Sawyer 59-48 in the consolation game of the UMass.-Boston Tournament. The Panthers move to 1-1 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 1-1. Middlebury returns to action at Smith on Tuesday night.

Middlebury came out strong, taking a 19-5 lead in the game’s first 9:46 behind eight points from all-tournament team member Sarah Marcus. The Chargers cut the lead to nine before another run gave the Panthers a 31-12 advantage at the break.

Colby-Sawyer made a run in the first 5:45 of the second half, scoring 14 of 19 points to cut the advantage to six at 34-28. The Chargers came within three on two different occasions, but a 12-7 run put the lead at a dozen with 3:24 play as the Panthers held on for the win.

Tracy Borsinger paced the team with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Marcus added 14. Rachel Crews netted seven with five boards, while Katie Ritter had seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

Taylor DeSanty scored 18 to lead Colby Sawyer, Kelsey Cahill scored eight, while Caitlin Bullett added seven with eight boards.
