November 20, 2012
Middlebury dropped an 80-47 game at Smith on Tuesday night. It was the Panthers (1-2) who took an early 4-0 lead on baskets by Rachel Crews and Sarah Marcus, but Smith (2-0) responded with nine straight points. Rosa Drummond knocked down a short jumper and a three point basket, and Amanda Zakoske fed Paulina Solis for a layup off an offensive rebound.
Devon Quattrocchi’s jumper pushed the lead to 17-6 at the 12:41 mark of the first half, and Smith continued to pour it on, going up 29-10 on Lauren Weston’s short hoop with 7:55 to play. Bethany Claps’ layup with 2:27 to play gave Smith their biggest advantage at 41-17, and the Pioneers took a 43-20 lead into halftime courtesy of Brittany Purington's basket just under the minute mark.
The second half saw more of the same, as Smith opened the period on a 10-2 run, capped by two free throws from Drummond. Smith led by as many as 37 points when Solis sank a layup with 3:06 left in the game.
Every player who got in the game scored for Smith, who was led by 15 points apiece from Drummond and Solis, while Quattrochi chipped in 13 points. Zakoske led the team with nine rebounds. The Pioneers shot 50% from three point range, while Middlebury struggled from deep, connecting on just 2-11 long-range attempts. Katie Ritter led the Panthers with nine points.
Smith will break for the holiday, before hitting the road to play at RPI on Sunday, while Middlebury will visit Plattsburgh on Sunday.
