Women's Hockey Prepares To Host Final Four
March 17, 2004
3/18/04 - The Middlebury College women's ice hockey team will host the NCAA Division III Women's Hockey final four this weekend at the Kenyon Arena. This will be the Panthers first appearance in the NCAA semifinals, after being eliminated from the NCAA Tourney in the first-round for the past two seasons. Middlebury did win the '00 and '01 AWCHA (American Women's College Hockey Alliance) National Championship, prior to the NCAA taking over the national tournament in '02.
Middlebury advanced to the semifinals after a 2-1 win over two-time defending national champion Elmira in the quarterfinals last Saturday at the Kenyon Arena. The Panther qualified to play in the tournament by earning one of two at-large bids after a solid 21-4 season (prior to NCAA's).
Middlebury ranks in the top six nationally in five different categories, including a nation's best .294 power play percentage. The Panthers are among the best in scoring offense (4.86), scoring defense (1.31), scoring margin and winning percentage. Leading the team this season are four first-team All-NESCAC selections. Forwards Lorna Gifis (25-21-46) and Emily Quizon (14-30-44) lead the offense, while defender Shannon Tarrant (11-13-24) and goaltender Kate Kogut (11-1, 0.96 GAA, .939 save percentage) pace the defense. Her GAA and winning percentage rank her third nationally, while her save percentage is seventh. Splitting time in net for a majority of the season has been Kati Madouros, who sports an 11-3 record, with a 1.63 GAA and .893 save percentage.
