Women's Hockey To Host NCAA Quarterfinals

3/8/04 - The Middlebury College women's ice hockey team will make its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance (third year of the tournament) this weekend when they host Elmira in an NCAA Quarterfinal. The game will take place on Friday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Kenyon Arena.

Middlebury earned the right to play in the tournament by earning one of two at-large bids after a solid 21-4 season. Elmira received an automatic bid after beating Plattsburgh 3-2 in the ECAC West Championship game. The Soaring Eagles lead the all-time series 2-0, including a 2-1 win at the Kenyon Arena on January 9th.

 

The Panthers enter the tournament with a 0-2 overall record in NCAA Tournament play, with losses to Bowdoin in each of the last two seasons. Middlebury ranks in the top six nationally in five different categories, including a nation's best .302 power play percentage. The Panthers are among the best in scoring offense (4.96), scoring defense (1.32), scoring margin and winning percentage. Leading the team this season are four first-team All-NESCAC selections. Forwards Lorna Gifis (24-21-45) and Emily Quizon (14-29-43) lead the offense, while defender Shannon Tarrant (11-13-24) and goaltender Kate Kogut (10-1, 0.96 GAA, .939 save percentage pace the defense. Her GAA and winning percentage rank her third nationally, while her save percentage is seventh. Splitting time in net is Kati Madouros, who sports an 11-3 record, with a 1.63 GAA and .893 save percentage.

Elmira enters the tournament as the two-time defending NCAA Champions. The Soaring Eagles went 15-1-1 during a stretch this season, but are 3-2-1 in their last six games. The team ranks in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense, defense, scoring margin, winning percentage, power play and penalty kill. Leading the team in scoring have been Laura Hurd (21-25-46), Lindsay Palmer (11-17-28), Shannon Sargent (14-12-26) and Charissa Gawant (9-15-24). In goal, Edith Racine has played a majority of the time with an 8-7-2 record and a 1.75 GAA. Kristin Lillie is 10-0 with a 0.60 GAA, playing 37 percent of the time.
