Four Women's Hockey Players Named First-Team All-NESCAC, Mandigo Named Coach of the Year

3/2/04 - Four members of the Middlebury College women's hockey team were named to the conference's first-team today. Junior Lorna Gifis (Princeton, N.J.), sophomores Emily Quizon (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Kate Kogut (Springfield, Mass.), along with first-year player Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, Conn.) were all honored.

Gifis and Quizon have been atop the scoring column for much of the season for the Panthers. They both currently have 42 points, which leads the team and puts them in a tie for second place in the NESCAC. Gifis has 21 goals and 21 assists, while Quizon has 14 goals and a team-leading 28 assists on the year. They are part of an offense that ranks third nationally with 5.13 goals/game. They have combined for six power play goals on a team that leads the nation with a 30 percent efficiency on the power play.

Defensively, Tarrant was named to the team as a rookie, while Kogut is the league's first-team selection in goal. The duo anchor a defense that allows just 1.22 goals/game, ranking them third nationally. Tarrant has also been a top offensive threat this season, ranking third on the team with 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points on the year. Kogut is third in the nation and first in the NESCAC with a 0.96 goals against average this season. She has a record of 9-1 with a .931 save percentage and five shutouts.

Head Coach Bill Mandigo earns conference coach of the year honors after leading his team to a 20-3 record, 15-1 in NESCAC play. Now in his 16th year behind the Panther bench, Mandigo has a career record of 272 wins, 80 losses and 10 ties. He was named the ECAC Women's Hockey Alliance Coach of the Year in '96 and the ECAC Coach of the Year, as well as the AHCA National Coach of the Year in '01.
