Women's Hockey Holds On To Defeat UWSP

1/10/04 - It was another top 10 match-up at the Kenyon Arena as #6 Middlebury held on to defeat #4 Wisconsin-Steven's Point, 3-2. The Pointers scored two goals in the game's final 2:36 to make it a one-goal contest. Middlebury out shot UWSP, 25-16 on the night.
Middlebury opened the scoring 5:47 into the game as Gloria Velez snapped home a shot from the slot area. Just 2:07 later, Shannon Tarrant struck with a shot from the right point on the power play with a nice feed from Emily Quizon. The Panthers made it a 3-0 game just 1:13 into the second period as Jean Butler scored a similar goal with a feed from Heather Wende for the five-on-three power play tally. The game remained at 3-1 until the final minutes when the Pointers made a run. The first goal came after netminder Kati Madouros was unable to clear the puck as it was picked off and put into an empty net by Tracy Truckey. With their netminder pulled, Stevens Point struck again at 19:26 as Chris Hanson snapped home a shot from the left circle. UWSP could muster up no solid chances in the game's final 34 seconds, leaving Middlebury with a 3-2 win.
Madouros played very well in net for Middlebury, making 14 saves on the night. Amy Statz made 22 stops for the Pointers. (box)
