Women's Hockey Tops Williams, Headed To NESCAC Final

3/5/05 - Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC Championship game with a 4-1 win over Williams in a semifinal contest at Bowdoin. The Panthers will take on the Polar Bears, a 2-1 overtime winner over Hamilton, in the title game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

 The Panthers opened the scoring late in the first period when junior Gloria Velez skated in from the right wing and snapped a shot past Denise McCullouch. Middlebury ended the period with an 11-3 shots advantage and a 1-0 lead.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Panthers took a 2-0 advantage 6:11 into the second period when senior Lorna Gifis opened one-timed a quick cross-crease pass from junior Emily Quizon for the power play goal. The Panthers made it a 3-0 game at 11:45 as sophomore Abby Kurtz-Phelan's shot was saved by McCullouch before it trickled through her pads. Williams turned up the heat after the goal, with several good shots before Tonya Latham scored in transition with a nice feed from Ashley Wood at 13:37. The Ephs continued to charge, with junior Kate Kogut making a big save on Latham at 18:20, to leave the Panthers with a 3-1 advantage after two periods.

The third period continued to go the way of the Ephs, with Williams having several good scoring opportunities. Two of their best chances were by Anna Condino, who hit the pipe with two different shots in the period. Middlebury sealed the game at 17:51 as Velez notched her second goal of the game with an empty-netter. Kogut ended the game with 22 saves in goal for Middlebury, while McCulloch made 18 for Williams.
