Women's Hockey Tops Manhattanville
March 10, 2006
Middlebury advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the third consecutive season after a 4-3 win over Manhattanville in an NCAA quarterfinal match-up in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers advance to take on Gustavus Adolphus in the semifinals next Friday in Plattsburgh. The host school meets Wis.-Stevens Point in the other semifinal contest.
Manhattanville jumped on the board early, with a goal just 2:49 into the contest. Jessica Zimmerman carried the puck down the right side before losing control just outside the crease. The puck squirted free as a collision in front of the net sent Kate Kogut to the ice as the puck slide across the goal line. Middlebury's Shannon Sylvester had a short handed opportunity at the 15-minute mark, but her shot was stopped on a blocker save by Karine Turmel. The Valiants had a two-on-one with eight minutes left in the period, but Kogut came up big on Natalie Zitek to deny the shot.
Middlebury had a great chance to tie the game 44 seconds into the second period, but Turmel turned Emily McNamara's shot aside. Manhattanville took a 2-0 lead at 5:48 as Cory Alcorn intercepted a failed clearing pass in the slot and quick snapped a shot past Kogut. Middlebury cut the lead in half, getting on the board at 9:41 with a power play goal. Annemarie Cellino's shot from the right side was saved by Turmel, leaving an open look on the far side for Erika Nakamura who buried the shot. The Panthers tied the game at 13:18 with a short handed goal, as Tania Kenny flipped a shot over Turmel after she had gone down to make a save on Kenny's first shot. The Panthers had a chance to take the lead at the 15:54 mark with three good shots on a five-on-three power play, but they could not find the back of the net.
The Panthers took a 3-2 lead 7:18 into the third period as Cellino one-timed a shot from the slot off the crossbar after a nice feed from Shannon Sylvester. Middlebury then had three consecutive power play opportunities, including a few five-on-three chances, but could not finish. The Panthers finally broke through at 16:14 as Gloria Velez scored a power play goal. Turmel made a pair of saves on Cellino and Karen Levin, before Velez buried the second rebound from the left side. Manhattanville would not go away as they made it a one-goal game at 17:24 as Zimmerman scored her second of the game, poking home a puck outside the slot. The Valiants went on a power play just 10 seconds later, but the opportunity quickly ended as they took a penalty just 13 seconds in. Manhattanville could not pull Turmel until the 19:49 mark, and were not able to get the equalizer. The Panthers out shot the Valiants 38-21 as Kogut ended the night with 18 saves, while Turmel made 34.
