Women's Hockey Headed To NESCAC Final

March 4, 2006

Middlebury broke up a scoreless tie with three third period goals on its way to a 3-1 win over Colby in a NESCAC semifinal in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers advance to the NESCAC Championship game at 1:00 on Sunday against Bowdoin, a 2-1 winner over Williams. This will be Middlebury's fourth consecutive trip to the title game, capturing the tournament in '01, '03 and '05.

Middlebury dominated the first period, holding a 21-3 shots advantage. Colby netminder Genevieve Triganne was stellar in the period, denying all 21 Panther opportunities.

The second period was much the same, with Triganne looking solid with 13 saves, several coming on four minutes of Middlebury power play opportunities. Kate Kogut kept the game scoreless with a big glove save on Rebecca Julian with 1:30 remaining in the period.

Middlebury finally broke onto the board at 8:21 of the third period with a power play goal. Emily Quizon's shot from the right face-off circle was saved by Triganne, with the rebound bouncing out to the high slot. Annemarie Cellino quickly gathered the puck and blasted a shot to the top left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Colby answer just 14 seconds later as Caroline Voyles sent a puck to the slot from the right face-off circle. Rebecca Julian was there for the quick one-timer to tie the game at one.

The Panthers regained the lead at 11:56 as Erika Nakamura tipped in a shot from the slot after a shot from the outside by Tania Kenney for a power play goal. Just 1:25 later, Cellino sent a quick pass to the slot as she was falling to the ice, where Quizon dove and deflected the puck into the back of the net.

Kogut ended the afternoon with 11 saves in goal, while Triganne made 43 stops for Colby.
