Women's Hockey Blanks Gustavus

In a battle of two of the nation's top three teams, #1 Middlebury improved its winning streak to 24 games with a 3-0 win over third-ranked Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties held a 26-20 shots advantage in the contest, but couldn't solve Kate Kogut, who made 26 saves for the shutout.

After going 0-3 on its first three power play attempts, Middlebury took a 1-0 lead with just 2:22 left in the first period. Rookie Annemarie Cellino scored the goal as she skated down the right side and snapped a shot into the top right corner.

Both team had great chances to score in the second period with breakaway attempts. Kitty Hurley stopped Middlebury's Tania Kenney at 8:38, while Kate Kogut stuffed Molly Doyle just 42 seconds later.

The Panthers scored a late one once again, with a power play goal at the 19:48 mark of the second session. Cellino fed a pass across the top of the zone to Shannon Tarrant, who found the top left corner of the goal from the top of the face-off circle.

Both teams had some chances to score to score in the third period, including Hurley stopping Abby Kurtz-Phelan on a breakaway just 1:15 into the period. The Gusties kept up the pressure, but Cellino sealed the game at 17:22 with an empty-netter.

Kogut ended the game with 26 saves to earn the win, while Hurley made 20 saves in a losing effort.
