Women's Hockey Tops UWRF In OT

January 12, 2006

Top-ranked Middlebury improved its winning streak to 17 games with a 3-2 overtime win over ninth-ranked Wisconsin-River Falls. The Panthers trailed 2-0 after two periods before battling back to tie the game and eventually win it in overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Wisconsin-River Falls scored the game's first goal 9:36 into the second period. Leigh Landgraf fed the puck ahead to Lou Paulson, who drove to goal from the right side before snapping a shot through Kate Kogut.

Middlebury had three power play opportunities in the second period, but could not find the back of the net, despite having several good scoring opportunities. The Falcons increased their lead to 2-0 with 1:10 left in the period as Renae Bergh's shot from the left point was stopped by Kogut with a stick save, but the puck bounced over her stick and into the far corner. The Panthers held a 20-6 shots advantage after two periods, but trailed 2-0.

Middlebury cut the lead in half 5:13 into the third period as Gloria Velez skated to the net from the corner before scoring with a backhander. Middlebury tied the game just 1:16 later as Shannon Sylvester made a great pass from behind the net to Randi Dumont, who was open in the slot for the one-timer.

Just 36 seconds into overtime, the Panthers scored the game-winner on a power play which began late in the third period. Shannon Tarrant took a shot from the left point that was redirected into the net by Abby Kurtz-Phelan from the right side of the slot.

Kogut ended the game with 12 saves as Middlebury out shot Wisconsin-River Falls 32-14. Amber Linder made 29 saves in goal for the Falcons.
