Women's Hockey Falls To Plattsburgh In OT
February 20, 2007
Plattsburgh's Shay Bywater snapped a shot to the top right corner after a nice feed from Danielle Blanchard to give the Cardinals a 5-4 overtime win at Middlebury. The loss snaps Middlebury's (20-2-2) unbeaten streak at 22 games, with their only other loss coming in the season-opener at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals remain undefeated and move to 21-0-2 on the season. Middlebury returns to action when they host the NESCAC semifinals and finals on March 3rd and 4th in the Kenyon Arena.
Plattsburgh struck early with a pair of power play goals in the game's first five minutes. The first goal came at 4:28 as the Cardinals had a five-on-three advantage. Ainsley Brien's shot from the left point hit the pipe, deflected to Claire O'Connor, who quickly found an open Jessica Moreau in the slot for the goal. The Cardinals struck again just 21 seconds later as Blanchard broke through traffic down the middle and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Middlebury got on the board with a power play goal of its own as Shannon Tarrant scored with a blast from the point at the 9:00 mark. The goal was the 100th point of her career for Tarrant. Plattsburgh regained the two-goal lead at 12:39 as Amber Ellis was credit with a goal after a shot was deflected high and into the net off a defender.
Plattsburgh took a 4-2 lead just 3:28 into the second period as Bywater put in a rebound after a shot from Blanchard was saved. Middlebury answered at 6:26 as Annmarie Cellino snapped home a shot from the left circle after a nice dish from Ashley Bairos. The Panthers made it a one-goal game at the 8:57 mark with an odd goal. Abby Kurtz-Phelan's shot from inside the blue line went over the goal and off the back glass. Karen Levin quickly gathered the rebound on the goal line and roofed a quick shot into the net.
Middlebury had a couple chances to tie the game in the third period, but power plays at 7:35 and 12:44 failed. Plattsburgh went on the power play at 15:28, only to have Cellino score shorthanded on a breakaway with 3:41 left in the period to tie the game at four. The Cardinals had another chance to win the game in regulation, but they could not take advantage of a power play.
Lani Wright made nine saves and allowed four goals in 25 minutes for Middlebury, while Angie Todd made eight saves and allowed one goal in 36 minutes. Breanne Doyle made 13 saves in goal for Plattsburgh.
