Women's Hockey Downs Elmira In OT

January 3, 2009

Middlebury scored a shorthanded goal just 1:08 into overtime as the Panthers came from behind to beat Elmira, 5-4. Annmarie Cellino and Anna McNally worked a great give-and-go, with McNally netting her first goal of the year in her first game. The win is the second for fourth-ranked Middlebury over third-ranked Elmira this season.

Elmira scored a pair of goals in 32 seconds to take a 2-0 lead at the 15:08 mark of the first period. Kayla Coady scored the first on a rebound after a shot from Melanie Henshaw was saved. Kathryn Walker scored the second as her shot from the left point found the five-hole. Middlebury was 0/3 on the power play in the period, including 34 seconds with a five-on-three advantage.

Middlebury cut the lead in half 7:17 into the second period as Molly Vitt won a face-off back to McKenzie Stevens at the left point. Stevens' shot was tipped in front by Heather McCormack as the Panthers now trailed 2-1. The Panthers tied the game at the 15:17 mark as Maggie Melberg tipped in a great crossing pass from Erika Nakamura. Middlebury had a great chance to take the lead shorthanded moments later, but Cellino was denied on a breakaway by Allison Cubberley.

Elmira regained the lead just 1:46 later as Jenna McCall scored on a rebound after Jamie Kivi's shot was saved by Alexi Bloom on the power play.

Middlebury tied the game midway through the third period, as Nakamura scored from the slot after a nice feed from Melberg. The Panthers took their first lead of the game at 11:51, as Annmarie Cellino one-timed a pass from Heidi Woodworth to make it a 4-3 game. The lead lasted less than five minutes as Lauryn DePaul tied the game for the Soaring Eagles with a goal after a scramble in the crease area at 16:32.

Bloom ended the game with 25 saves, while Cubberley made 23 stops for Elmira.
