Women's Hockey Tops Wesleyan As Ireland Scores Four
January 28, 2011
Extending its winning streak vs. Wesleyan to nine games and its unbeaten streak to 46 (in 46 all-time meetings), Middlebury, tied for seventh nationally in Division III, got a four-goal performance from Julia Ireland to carry the Panthers to a 6-0 win over the Cardinals.
Middlebury racked up a 47-5 edge in shots against Wesleyan as Cardinal netminder sophomore Ashleigh Corvi registered her sixth game this year with more than 40 saves, posting 41. Her 19 stops in the first period kept it a 1-0 game as Middlebury scored with just 2:26 to go. A point shot from the right side by sophomore Heather Marrison sailed high to Corvi’s stick side on the power play to break the ice. Ireland, who entered the contest with five goals on the season, then tallied four of the final five Panther goals, including a natural hat trick with the final goal of the second stanza and both third-period markers. Also scoring was junior Grace Waters, her fifth of the year, to make it a 3-0 game at 9:01 of the middle period.
Sophomore Lauren Greer picked up three assists in the game, giving her eight this season and tying her for the team lead. Ireland now leads the balanced Panther attack with 14 points this year.
Middlebury, which is 43-0-3 all-time vs. Wesleyan, got four saves from starting keeper, junior Becca Shaw, before freshman Laura Pinsent minded the net for the final stanza, making one stop to preserve the shutout, the eighth of the season for the Panthers.
