November 1, 2013

The U.S. Women's Hockey Team defeated Finland 5-1 in Kenyon Arena today before a crowd of nearly 1,000. Instead of charging admission to the game, Middlebury raised over $1,800 for the United Way of Addison County. Following the contest, members of the U.S. squad took signed autographs and took photos with many of the kids who attended the game.

The U.S. Women’s Hockey National Team will take on Finland in an exhibition game on Friday, November 1st at 12:00 p.m. at Middlebury College’s Kenyon Arena. The game is part of the “Bring on the World Tour” to help prepare the U.S. women for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Admission to the game is free with a suggested donation of $5 to benefit the United Way of Addison County.

Former Middlebury College two-sport standout Lauren Greer has joined the coaching staff at her alma mater. Greer will serve as the primary assistant coach with the women’s hockey program, while also helping out with the field hockey team in the fall.

Middlebury’s Lauren Greer (N. Hampton, N.H.) has been named one of the NESCAC's two nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year. The duo (Elena Crosley - Bowdoin) were chosen among six finalists for the award and will now move on to the national selection.

Lauren Greer (N. Hampton, N.H.) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The two-sport standout will receive $7,500 from the NCAA for use towards a graduate program. To be eligible for the scholarship, the candidate must have performed with distinction as a member a varsity team at his or her institution.

Middlebury saw its hopes of a fourth NCAA Championship come to an end as they fell 1-0 to Elmira in the title game in Superior, Wisconsin. The Panthers, who were making their fifth title game appearance, finish the season with a 20-8-2 record. Elmira wins its third NCAA title and first since ’03, ending the year with a 24-5-1 mark.

Middlebury will make its first appearance in the NCAA Championship game since ’07 (fifth overall) after a 4-1 win over Plattsburgh in a semifinal game played in Superior, Wis. The Panthers will meet the winner of the Gustavus Adolphus/Elmira game at 8:00 p.m. eastern time on Saturday night for the title.

The Middlebury College women’s hockey team will make its seventh appearance in the NCAA semifinals when they travel to Wessman Arena in Superior, Wisconsin. The Panthers will meet familiar foe Plattsburgh on Friday, March 15th at 4:30 p.m., while Elmira meets Gustavus Adolphus at 8:00 p.m. The third-place game will take place at 4:30 on Saturday with the NCAA Championship game facing off at 8:00 p.m. (all times are eastern).

Middlebury College women’s hockey player Madison Styrbicki (Edina, Minn.) has been named a second-team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AWHCA). The Panther senior is currently in Wisconsin with her team as they prepare to battle Plattsburgh in an NCAA semifinal game on Friday.

The Middlebury College women’s hockey team will make its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance when they travel to Norwich for a quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 9th at 3:00 p.m. The Panthers earned an at-large bid to the tournament after falling in the NESCAC Championship game on Sunday.

Katie Sullivan scored the game-winning goal in overtime to earn the hat-trick as Middlebury advanced to the final four with a 3-2 overtime win at Norwich in an NCAA Quarterfinal game. The lead was the first of the game for the Panthers 74:28 into the game, as they advance to the final four for the seventh time. Middlebury will meet Plattsburgh on Friday, March 15th in Superior, Wisconsin.

Bowdoin won its third NESCAC Championship and first since ’04 with a 2-1 victory over Middlebury in Kenyon Arena. The Polar Bears (21-4-2) earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their fate on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. when the selections are announced. The Panthers move to 18-7-2 and will look for an at-large bid during the selection show.

Middlebury broke open a 2-1 game with a pair of third period goals on its way to a 4-1 victory over Connecticut College in a NESCAC semifinal game in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers (17-6-2) advance to the NESCAC Championship game for the ninth time in the 12 years of the tournament, and will meet Bowdoin, a 3-1 winner over Amherst, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Camels finish their season with a 14-11-1 mark.

Three members of the Middlebury College women’s hockey team have earned All-NESCAC honors. Senior Madison Styrbicki (Edina, Minn.) was named to the first-team, while senior Lauren Greer (N. Hampton, N.H.) and sophomore Hannah Bielawski (Evanston, Ill.) earned second-team honors. The group are preparing for this weekend’s NESCAC Championship that will take place on Saturday and Sunday in Kenyon Arena.

The Middlebury women's hockey team will host the 2013 NESCAC Championship in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers will take on Connecticut College, Saturday, March 2nd at 1:00 p.m., followed by Amherst vs. Bowdoin at 4:00 p.m. The winners meet in the title game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $5 for adults, $3 for students and are on sale now. Middlebury has now advanced to the NESCAC semifinals for all 12 years of the tournament after a 6-0 quarterfinal win over Colby (10-15) in Kenyon Arena. The fourth-ranked Panthers (17-6-2) will host the NESCAC semifinals and finals next Saturday and Sunday in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers went 4-6 on the power play and held a 43-19 shots advantage in the game.

In a battle of two of the top six teams in the nation, fourth-ranked Norwich picked up a 5-3 win over sixth-ranked Middlebury in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers (15-6-2) will wrap up their regular season this Saturday at Elmira, while the Cadets (18-2-3) will host Manhattanville on Friday.

Middlebury clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with a 4-1 road win at Williams on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (15-5-2, 12-2-2) will host a quarterfinal game on February 23rd and have earned the right to host the championship weekend on March 2nd and 3rd with a quarterfinal win.

Due to the impending storm expected to blanket the northeast, several schedule changes have occurred for Middlebury College Athletic events. The men’s and women’s NESCAC basketball games scheduled for Friday, February 8th vs. Trinity have been moved to Sunday, February 10th. The men will play at 5:00 and the women will follow at 7:00. Saturday’s games vs. Amherst have now also been postponed. The men’s game will be made up on Tuesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m., while the women will play on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m.

Middlebury took game one of a home-and-home series with Williams, topping the Ephs 4-1 in Kenyon Arena. The two teams will meet again on Sunday with a 4:00 p.m. start at Williams. The Panthers move to 14-5-2, 11-2-2 in the NESCAC, while the Ephs fall to 8-12-1, 4-8-1 in NESCAC play. With the win, Middlebury extends its Kenyon Arena unbeaten streak against NESCAC rivals to 24 games (22-0-2) dating back to a 4-2 loss to Bowdoin on February 19th of 2010.

Courtney Winters scored two goals to lead the offensive effort as Saint Anselm knocked off sixth-ranked Middlebury at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena. With the win, the Hawks will propel to 14-4-4 overall, while the Panthers will dip to a 13-5-2 record. The Hawks also gain their first win in program history against Middlebury in five attempts.

Caroline Corbett buried a shorthanded goal with 1:58 remaining to lift Connecticut College to a 3-2 upset victory against Middlebury at Dayton Arena Saturday. Samantha Shuffenecker scored twice while sophomore Kelsie Fralick stopped 39 of 41 shots against the fifth ranked Panthers, who suffered their first setback in this longstanding rivalry.

The Middlebury women’s hockey team dropped a 3-1 road game at top-ranked Plattsburgh State (19-0-1) on Wednesday night. The Panthers (12-3-2) return to action this weekend with a two-game NESCAC series at Connecticut College on Saturday and Sunday.

Middlebury broke a brief two-game losing streak with a 4-0 shutout victory at Connecticut College (10-9-1, 6-7-1) in game two of a NESCAC series. The fifth-ranked Panthers (13-4-2, 10-2-2) earn a split in the series after being knocked off 2-1 on Saturday. Emily Fluke scored a natural hat-trick with all three markers coming in the third period and assisted on a fourth goal in the win.

Middlebury College women’s hockey player Katie Sullivan (Bethesda, Md.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Sullivan posted three goals and two assists for Middlebury in a pair of 5-2 wins over Hamilton. After recording a goal and an assist in the first period on Friday, the forward scored one more time in the third to put the Panthers in front 4-2.

The fifth-ranked Middlebury women’s hockey team picked up a 5-2 win over Hamilton (9-6-1, 4-4-1) in game one of a two game series at Kenyon Arena on Friday night. The Panthers (11-2-2, 8-1-2) scored twice in 15 seconds in the third period to open up a one-goal game on their way to the win.

Middlebury completed a two-game sweep of Hamilton (9-6-1, 4-5-1), topping the Continentals 5-2 in Kenyon Arena. Fifth-ranked Middlebury (12-2-2, 9-1-2) will now play its next five games on the road, beginning next Wednesday night at top-ranked Plattsburgh.

Middlebury outshot Bowdoin 33-23 but could not find the back of the net as the Panthers suffered a 3-0 road loss at Bowdoin. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears (13-1-1, 7-0-0 NESCAC) scored a goal in each period against the fourth ranked defense in D-III and extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games.

Emily Fluke scored a pair of goals as Middlebury snapped Bowdoin’s 14-game unbeaten streak in a 4-2 victory Saturday at Watson Arena. The fourth-ranked Panthers improve to 10-2-2 (7-1-2 NESCAC) after the win. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears (13-2-1, 7-1-0 NESCAC) drop their first game since opening night (November 17) as the teams split their two-game weekend set.

The Middlebury hockey teams are proud to announce their annual "Skate With The Panthers" event. The women will be available on Saturday, January 12th following the 3:00 p.m. game vs. Amherst, while the men will host fans following the 4:00 p.m. game on January 19th vs. Bowdoin. Team photos will be given out at each event with players available to skate with as well as sign autographs.

Amherst’s Erin Martin scored with an extra attacker with just 31 seconds left to earn a 1-1 tie at Middlebury in game one of a two-game NESCAC series. The fourth-ranked Panthers move to 8-1-2, 5-0-2 in the league, while the Jeffs see their record go to 7-4-1 overall, 5-1-1 in NESCAC play. The teams return to action on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. face-off.

Middlebury led 5-0 before coming away with a 5-2 win over Amherst in Kenyon Arena. The fourth-ranked Panthers improve to 9-1-2, 6-0-2 in NESCAC play while the Jeffs fall to 7-5-1, 5-2-1 in the league. Middlebury is now unbeaten in its last eight games (6-0-2). The Panthers return to action next weekend with NESCAC games at Bowdoin on Friday and Saturday.

McKenzie Martin had a goal and two assists as Middlebury jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 6-1 win over Wesleyan in a NESCAC women's hockey contest Friday night at Kenyon Arena. Martin's three-point night led a balanced attack as six different players accounted for Middlebury's offense.

Fourth-ranked Middlebury returned from the semester break with a 4-1 road win at Utica on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers return to action this Friday (7:00) and Saturday (3:00) when they host Wesleyan in a pair of NESCAC games. Middlebury improves to 6-1-1, while UC falls to 4-6 on the season.

Middlebury picked up a 3-0 road win at Castleton (6-3-1) to improve to 5-1-1 on the season. The fourth-ranked Panthers end the semester unbeaten in their last three games, returning to action on January 2nd at Utica. The loss ends the Spartans seven-game home unbeaten streak.

Middlebury goaltender Laura Pinsent made 34 saves in goal to lead visiting Middlebury to a 4-1 win over Trinity. The loss follows a 1-1 tie on Saturday and is the first loss of the season for Trinity, which falls to 2-1-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the NESCAC. The fourth-ranked Panthers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the league.

Plattsburgh used a goal in each period on its way to a 3-2 win over Middlebury at the Panther/Cardinal Classic in Kenyon Arena. The top-ranked Cardinals move to 7-0-1 on the season, while the fifth-ranked Panthers suffer their first loss of the year, falling to 3-1. Middlebury held a 31-18 shots advantage in the game.

Hannah Bielawski scored 1:10 into overtime to lift Middlebury to a 4-3 win over fourth-ranked Elmira (7-1-1) at the Panther/Cardinal Classic in Kenyon Arena. The second-ranked Panthers improve to 3-0 with the victory. Both teams return to action tomorrow when Elmira takes on Amherst at 1:00 p.m. and Middlebury meets Plattsburgh at 4:00 p.m.

Middlebury outshot Colby 40-12, but needed a goal with just 3:00 left to pick up a 3-2 NESCAC win over Colby in Kenyon Arena. The contest was the season-opener for both teams, who will meet again on Saturday in a 3:00pm clash.

Middlebury was back in action Saturday afternoon, picking up their second win of the weekend against Colby. Five different players scored for the fifth-ranked Panthers, who moved to 2-0 on the season, while Colby falls to 0-2.
