Women's Hockey Debuts With A Win

November 16, 2012

Middlebury outshot Colby 40-12, but needed a goal with just 3:00 left to pick up a 3-2 NESCAC win over Colby in Kenyon Arena. The contest was the season-opener for both teams, who will meet again on Saturday in a 3:00pm clash.

Despite being outshot 13-3 in the first period, Colby entered the intermission with a 1-0 lead. The lone goal came at the 10:10 mark when a dump in from the corner by Maddie Dewhirst was deflected in the slot by Samantha Slotnick for the 1-0 lead.

Middlebury tied the game in the second period with a five-on-three power play goal. Madison Styrbicki’s blast from the slot was saved by Brianna Wheeler (37 saves) before Hannah Bielawski pounced on the rebound to tie the game at 1-1 at the 5:21 mark.

The Panthers had a chance to add to their lead at the 13:02 mark, but Sara Ugalde’s shot hit the crossbar. Colby had a chance of their own with 2:00 remaining, but Annabelle Jones (10 saves) denied Megan Fortier on a breakaway after a nice flip pass from Maddy Borek.

Middlebury took its first lead of the game 3:21 into the third period when Emily Fluke finished after a nice backhanded pass from the left wing by Katie Mandigo.

Colby was threatening late, and broke through to tie the game with just 3:38 remaining. Meredith Reynolds circled the Panther net and threw the puck towards the net as it deflected off Jones and into the back of the net.

Middlebury answered just 38 seconds later, scoring the game winner off a turnover. Madeline Joyce carried the puck in on the left wing before blasting a shot to the far side of the net past Wheeler for the game-winner.
