Women's Lacrosse Headed To NCAA Championship Game

May 15, 2004

5/15/04 - Middlebury (18-0) will make its seventh trip to the NCAA Championship game after a 13-9 win over <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Amherst in the NCAA semifinals at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The Panthers will take on The College of New Jersey (18-0), a 14-9 winner over Salisbury, in the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. This will be the seventh meeting between Middlebury and TCNJ, with the Lions holding a 4-2 advantage. The teams have not met since a 12-6 Middlebury win in the '02 title game.

The win is the third over the Jeffs this season, while also helping to avenge a loss in the '03 title game. Amherst is the only team to have beaten Middlebury in the last four years.

Middlebury scored six of the game's first seven goals, jumping out to a 6-1 lead with 12:57 left in the first half. Three different players scored the first three goals, all of them coming in a 2:44 span. Following an Amherst goal, Nuala O'Donohoe scored a pair, followed by a free position goal from Kim Walker to give the Panthers a 6-1 lead. Amherst ended the run before the Panthers third three-goal run of the half began. Walker and O'Donohoe netted the first two, while Claire Edelen scored her second of the game with 4:24 left in the half to give Middlebury a 9-3 lead. Amherst found the back of the net with 14 seconds left in the half to make it a 9-4 game at the break.

The teams exchanged the first four goals of the second half, leaving the Panthers with an 11-5 lead, two goals in 59 seconds from O'Donohoe and Elizabeth Renehan gave Middlebury its largest lead of the day at 13-5. Amherst scored four times in the game's last 9:43 to make it a 13-9 final.

O'Donohoe led the Panthers with four goals, while Walker added three. Renehan and Edelen chipped in with two goals apiece. Sarah Grenert made eight saves in goal to get the win.
